"Hey," Ben said, shoving his safety goggles up onto the top of his head and turning to face his students. "This is Better Living Through Chemistry and I'm Ben Skywalker. Tomorrow's a major holiday on this planet that involves explosives, and so I'm gonna show you how to make fireworks today."

There could be a fight between his and Thor's classes about how much damage they do to the Danger Shop over the next few weeks. Oops? "But before we do that, let's go through the safety rules, okay? I"m pretty happy being a Skywalker with all of my limbs attached and I don't plan on having that change just by teaching you people."

And then Ben went through an exhaustive run-down of Things Not to Do When Playing With Things That Blow Up.

Which is easily summarized as "don't blow Ben, yourself, or your classmates up. Also, wear goggles."

Just because the instructions were easily summarized didn't mean they weren't important. Kathy took very detailed notes, both on the safety lecture and then the chemistry behind the fireworks.

Neeeeerd.

Barry paid no attention to the safety lecture.

He did put on goggles and was prepared to be cautious with today's class because he was not an idiot.

Emma underlined the bit about goggles, it seemed like a good idea.

Ben's left out extremely detailed instructions.

After slipping on goggles, a lab coat, and a pair of rubber gloves, Kathy sat down to start building the fireworks. Creating the shell was kind of cool, but it was the actual chemistry that she found fascinating.

Barry dived into the class exercise as soon as the lecture was done, possibly creating multiple fireworks that most pyrotechnics would be scratching their heads at.

He was also happy he didn't have to do any introductions this week. Straight applicable science class exercises for the win.

This was...different.

Danger Shop or no, Emma may have triple checked the instructions before she got started.

Because really, what's the point in making them otherwise?

When Barry's timed fireworks went off he somehow had managed them to make it look like a green gremlin biting an ankle.

He was very satisified with the results.

"Nice!" Ben said, applauding. "That's astral!"

"Thanks," Barry said looking at the results. "I think next time I'll make the ankle bleed a bit."

"Oooh," Ben said approvingly. "Maybe a couple more gremlins?"

"Do they usually hunt in packs?" Barry asked. "I'd had to be inaccurate here."

"When they've bit me, there's normally been a couple," Ben admitted. "I think one stands as a guard."

Unlike some people, Kathy's fireworks were nothing all that impressive. But she managed to make a bunch and when they all went off (together, of course, because what was more fun than a GIANT DISPLAY OF FIREWORKS?!) she was pleased to see that they all worked and the resulting explosion was awesome.

Ben grinned at her excitement. "Fun, right?"

"So much fun," she assured him.

This almost made up for last year, when he tried to kill her!

Well, that was mostly Anakin? Sort of?

"Anything else you want to try to make?" he asked.

Yeah, but he was the one she'd yelled at. Anakin was scaaaaary.

"With explosives or for the class in general?" Kathy asked. "Flashbang grenades and smoke bombs would be cool to learn--" for no reason, really! "--and I'd like to try to make stuff, like maybe ice cream? Since it's summer and all."

~~No, it's winter! Brr! Only 70!~~

"We can do both of those, though the ice cream probably won't explode unless you're doing it really, really wrong."

Hey now! Ben had a friend who could do that!

"I'm okay with non-exploding ice cream," Kathy promised. "It might interfere with eating it!"

~~Zero. Sympathy.~~

"And in this classroom, wasting ice cream is a detention-worthy crime," Ben said, nodding.

"I'll keep that in mind, Mr. Skywalker! But I'm pretty sure that won't be a problem!"

Somewhere, Karla just burst out cackling and had no idea why.

"Nice!" Barry said honestly. "Good colors."

"Thanks!" Kathy said, beaming. "Though nothing compared to yours. I've never seen fireworks that made pictures before!"

She faltered for a moment wondering if he had been sincere; what she'd managed to accomplish was probably something he'd breezed through before he could toddle. But he seemed like he'd meant it, which had her brightening back up again.

"Odds that this'll be your favorite class of the semester?" she asked.

"Not sure yet," Barry quipped. "The arts and crafts with the talking pink pony might be my biggest fucking challenge yet."

To his sanity.

"Weaponry might be mine," Kathy confided. "I figured out how to make a flamethrower!"

She looked very proud of that, yes.

Emma's fireworks went off without any trouble, even if they weren't especially spectacular.

But that was okay, she'd be able to do better in the future ~~with her mind~~.

Whee!

Well, that OCD took way too long. Sorry about that: sick kiddo in the house today.
