"Welcome to Customer Service and You," Josh said. "I have had some seriously itchy polyblend shirts made up for you in bright yellow with your names on 'em. No need to thank me, but you do need to wear them every week."

"This class is gonna show you how to interact with people in a way that doesn't involve you setting them on fire because people can be amazingly, amazingly stupid but jail is not really a good thing," Josh said. He gestured around at the county fair he'd programmed the Danger Shop to look like. "Since the Fourth of July is Friday, America is chock full of hometown fun like this full of sticky, over-sugared kids, parents bitching about how much watered down beer costs, and at least one teenager trying to rock the ferris wheel basket until his girlfriend bursts into tears and breaks up with him for being a di--" Josh remembered he was talking to students just in time, "--jerk. Anyway, you'll each be given a job that you're pulling out of this hat--" he held out a Mets ball cap, "--and then I'll send some Danger Shop people at you to be annoying. The goal is to not have them ask for your supervisor. Good luck!"

Kaylin? Was going to do soooo badly in this class. So badly. So very very badly.

Flick: You're the ticket taker on the Ferris wheel. Make sure those kids meet the minimum height requirement!
Sia: You're doling out the soft serve ice cream. Don't kill the people asking if you have anything lactose intolerant.
Liara: Make funnel cakes! Mmmm, being covered in grease and powdered sugar.
Kaylin: Get people to step right up at the ring toss! They won't win because no one ever wins. Make sure they're not too angry.

This was probably not going to go well. Flick wasn't the nicest guy to begin with and right now, with his fingers broken and in pain and his face a mess of bruises and cuts, he probably looked the part too.

Maybe that would just prevent anyone from being chatty and he could just scare everyone who wanted to go on the ride who wasn't allowed.

Josh and a Danger Shop-generated woman approached with three tiny, hyper children. "Hey, we want to go on the ride."

One of the kids was definitely too short to ride.

"Congratulations," Flick said, giving the short kid a look. "While I appreciate your interest in the ride, your youngest one's not tall enough. Maybe in a few years."

"Then you can watch him while the rest of us go, right?" Josh said.

"I'm not a babysitter so no," Flick said, shaking his head. "Maybe you can take one of your kids to ride it with you and then when you're done, your other kids that are tall enough can ride?"

He was going to try and be reasonable here.

"How about I give you five bucks and you watch my kid for me?" Josh countered.

"Really?" Flick asked, looking at her. "Ma'am, let me give you some unsolicited advice. You're basically saying your kid's worth five dollars right now. Don't do that. Spend time with him, find another ride and hang with him because you seriously don't know when it's gonna end. Spend time with your kid because he'll remember it when he's older."

Josh flipped out of character. "You okay, Skippy?"

"Bad weekend," Flick said, shrugging. "Lost someone close to me. Won't see him again. I'll live."

Josh chewed on his lower lip. "You'll live but it'll hurt like hell for a while," he said.

Because if Josh was an expert on something that wasn't related to the US government, it was survivor's guilt.

"Already learning that, yeah," Flick said, nodding. "Not a fun time."

"If you need someone to talk to, I have office hours on Friday," Josh said. "I've had experience with losing people and I know where to find the good coffee and bagels."

"I'll keep that in mind," Flick said, shrugging. "Not really a big talker."

But hey, it was nice to know there was someone around if he needed it.

Josh paused for a second to remember and really miss Leo for a second. "This guy's walking down the street when he falls in a hole. The walls are so steep he can't get out," he began, a tiny, wistful smile on his face. "A doctor passes by and the guy shouts up, 'Hey you. Can you help me out?' The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a priest comes along and the guy shouts up, 'Father, I'm down in this hole can you help me out?' The priest writes out a prayer, throws it down in the hole and moves on. Then a friend walks by, 'Hey, Joe, it's me can you help me out?' And the friend jumps in the hole. Our guy says, 'Are you stupid? Now we're both down here.' The friend says, 'Yeah, but I've been down here before and I know the way out.'"

He looked Flick straight in the eyes. "I know the way out, Skippy."

Flick didn't say anything for a few seconds before he nodded. "I'll think about it. Maybe I'll come by. See what happens."

Kaylin's version? Stepping right into someone's face and telling him he'd better take a shot at the ring toss or he was going to be very sorry.

Who's eating a funnel cake. Mmmm.
