Music Appreciation, Tuesday, Period 2
Hannibal nodded and smiled to the students as they took their seats. "This is traditionally the week where we are supposed to have some sort of an exam for you, to prove you've learned what we've had to teach. However, I've already had you discover your own music, and I imagine we have as little desire to grade essays as you would to write them."
Possibly less.
Jono had been a snake in Glacia for the past four weeks. He really didn't want to grade essays, thank you. Jono was mostly just itching to do something with his hands, because he had really, really missed having those.
//So, this week, we're going to show you how we choose to involve ourselves with music, beyond simply listening to it on the radio,// he offered, sitting up on the desk today with his candy apple red Fender Stratocaster in his lap. Because of course he had his Strat here. //Hannibal and I are both familiar with a few musical instruments, and while we might not strictly be musicians in a professional sense, we're both certainly comfortable enough with our respective abilities to be willing to play in front of an audience, to demonstrate to you that music can be created with our own two hands, even without benefit of a voice.//
A little like the singing class, then, except with less of Jono sitting to the side and refusing to actively get involved.
"There are, as you've already heard, a vast number of musical instruments you can learn to play," Hannibal added. "I will let Mr. Starsmore explain his own; what I will be playing for you today is the theremin, one of the earliest electronic instruments. It was that or harpsichord, and as the school doesn't have either, I elected to bring the more portable one and record the other."
He gestured at the block of wood with an antenna on the top and another protruding from the side. "It's played by positioning your hands in relation to the two antennas." He demonstrated a bit, then went for a piece by Handel, accompanied by a recording of himself playing the harpsichord.
//My own instrument of choice is a little more accessible,// Jono shared, nodding down at his guitar. //This is an electric guitar. Even if you've only been halfheartedly paying attention to our lessons this term, you've heard one of these being played. It's a string instrument- the different strings produce different sounds.// He gave a brief demonstration of some basic fingering techniques before he started playing - what else? - some Pearl Jam.
Look, the first chance he had at a guitar in several weeks meant he was going to play whatever he bloody well pleased. Plus, Alive had a pretty unique opening riff and guitar solo, and it wasn't like he could sing the lyrics to anything.
"So," Hannibal gestured around the room, "come and talk to us about our instruments, or explore the others in the room. We'll answer what questions we can, and you're welcome to try your hand at any of them -"
//Except this one,// Jono said quickly, clutching his Strat a little closer. //There are other guitars in the room.//
This was his guitar. There were many like it, but this one was his. And had once been briefly a human and wearing more leather bondage than Jono usually did. He was protective of this one.
Hannibal nodded in concession and did his best to hide his amusement. "Except for that one."

Re: Talk to the Teachers!
He looked at Hannibal hopefully.
Re: Talk to the Teachers!
"Very well, you may bring her and conduct whatever exorcism you have need of." He held up a hand to forestall any more gushing. "Please test it when you're finished; I would rather it come apart now than in a crisis."
