The students met in a standard classroom today, and there was something written on the whiteboard as they walked in:

Compromise: noun An agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.

"Compromising," Jack said, gesturing at the board, "is what teamwork is about. Unless you're in charge and an ass, you aren't going to get everything you want all the time. You need to be able to figure out what you're willing to give up to get what you want. If you don't, you're not gonna get anything done at all."

She drew two circles on the board, one inside the other. "So this," she said, tapping the inside one, "is your inflexible area. This is the stuff you won't give up on. The outside circle is your flexible area. It's the crap that you could bend on, even if you'd rather not. When you're compromising, you can make a list of what's in both circles and then talk them through with your team to figure out what's the best choice for the most people."

"Your assignment for today is to do a circle like this to figure out where we're going for lunch. My treat, as long as we all agree on a compromise by the end of class. No compromise, no free food."

She tapped the inner circle. "So what's the stuff you absolutely won't compromise on about lunch?"

Learn all about compromise.

"So,we're compromising on where to go for lunch," Jack said. "I'll start: My inflexible areas are that it has to be on the island, not cost more than $15 a head, and serve big portions. My flexible areas are everything else. Your turn."

"My inflexible area is that pickles can't be the main ingredient of the food. I fu- ... freaking hate pickles. My flexible area is that if I can take pickles off whatever I'm eating I'm fine with it."

"My inflexible area is that there needs to be some kind of vegetable option," Kathy decided. "Something more than lettuce on a burger or fries. I'd like at least the option of eating something green. But my flexible area is pretty much everything else."

"I don't want anything that's moving," Four added, "and I'm not big on spicy. But I'll try anything else once."

"Nothing moving, not too many pickles, choices that have something green in them, and not too spicy," Jack summarized, looking over the group. "Italian? The place in town does a mean seafood ravioli."

Which wasn't sushi, but she could deal. See, compromise!

"I will not eat flesh," Jalian added. "Or sugar." After several bouts of sickness, she had finally figured that one out.

"You can probably ask for non-flesh and sugar-free," Eleanor suggested. "I don't have any food I can think of that I wouldn't eat, so for the purposes of the exercise I'm going to pretend I refuse to eat seafood on some kind of moral grounds. I'm okay with other people eating seafood, so that's my flexible area. That means I'm still good with the Italian restaurant; they make a wonderful chicken marsala."

She wasn't very good at this exercise, but she was trying.

"I don't care if others eat those things," Jalian agreed. "And I don't know what chicken marsala is."

After a compromise is reached.

Who are probably not picky.

Jack was willing to go wherever the compromise led them, but she was privately hoping for sushi.

Korra voted for getting a lot of whatever they picked, she was a growing girl after all.
