Community Service and You, Friday, Period 2, An Orphanage on the Mainland

"Before we get started, I wanted to remind everyone that our final workshop will be a small gala brunch vent for charity," Bruce said. "So, make sure to dress nicely and be ready to try to talk rich people from out of town into donating as much as they're willing to give to good causes."

"But in the meantime, we're doing something near and dear to my heart today," Bruce said, shifting gears. "My parents were killed when I was eight years old. I was incredibly well off due to my parents' fortune and our butler, Alfred, raised me the way my father would have wanted. But even though I was the most fortunate orphan you could imagine, I still know what it was like to lose the most important people in the world to you at such a young age. Because of that, I make sure to give both time and money to orphanages regularly."

"Today, all I'm asking for is your time. Spend the class period hanging out with some kids. It helps if you go in with a specific activity in mind, but remember, it's about them. If they don't want to do anything on the playground, if they just want to read? Adjust your plans. Good luck."

Cosette Fauchelevent, for whom that statement is half true anyway

Barry decided to keep the kids entertained with science experiments.

No, not the life endangering ones he does back at the warehouse.

Today it was simple experiments using dishsoap, milk and food coloring drops (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqQSlEViNpk) and hyrdogen peroxide (http://www.stevespanglerscience.com/lab/experiments/elephants-toothpaste) borrowed from the school nurse.

Okay, really it wasn't SCIENCE in Barry's opinion but it kept the kids entertained.

Kathy grabbed cornstarch and water to make oobleck for the kids. It was fun to play with, if messy, and the kids loved it when she hooked up her headphones to the bottom of the tray and played dubstep.

Being a sort-of-orphan himself, Evan wasn't going to miss this class for anything.

... Not even for being stuck as a dog. So there he was, sitting like a good puppy at the edge of the playground outside, happy to play with any children who wanted to throw a stick for the puppy. Cuddles were also perfectly acceptable!

Cosette wasted no time rounding up as many of the kids as she could manage who wanted to hear a story, and herded them all inside to the library to choose books -- several, but (as she informed them nicely but sternly) within reason.

After that they all trooped right back outside and into a nice shady patch of grass where Cosette arranged them in a semi-circle around her and proceeded to read -- and to some extent act out, because she was still very much a big kid herself -- the stories to them.

. . . and then, when some of the kids tried to get her to join them on the swings afterward, it took no convincing whatsoever to get Cosette on that swingset.

Please, please don't call Bay Mom. Please.

She found the art supplies and made a little nook for kids who wanted to draw. Artsy kids were always her favorite.

Anyone calling Barry a "Dad" will get a snort of derision. Calling him "Mom" will get you a look of "WTF?"
