Teamwork for Jerks, Friday

The teamwork classroom was mostly bare today, with bins of Legos scattered throughout the space. Jack leaned against her desk as she began talking, arms folded and seeming totally at ease.

"Sometimes, your team has some crappy job to do that everybody needs to help with," she began. "Doesn't matter if it's not really your job, or if you feel like the whole thing is dumb. If you want the job to be done this year, everybody has to chip in without wasting time whining."

She hit a button on her datapad and projected an image onto the wall. "Today, your crappy little job is building a scale model of a spaceship out of Legos. There are a bunch of you and you have an hour and the blueprints. Remember the point is teamwork, not figuring out who you can do all the work while the rest of you fuck around on your phones." That was inspired by the mechanical genius in class, yes.

"Talk out who should do what, go to work, and if you're efficient you should get pretty far by the end of class."

Contemplate the Legos. Contemplate asking questions. Maybe actually ask questions.

Barry serenely played with a few lego pieces just feeling... relaxed. Calm.

He'd never felt this way before.

And he was wearing a tie-dye t-shirt.

What the fuck was wrong with him?

Jalian eyed him playing with them, but got no clues from that. "What are these things?" They didn't seem to be electrical components or have any sort of function...

"Legos," Barry said with a shrug. "They're a building toy. The little bricks interlock together-"

Cue Barry clicking two of the little bricks together.

"Like that. And there's all sorts of kits where you can build different things."

Jalian frowned at them, linked two bricks together, then pulled them apart. "They don't seem very sturdy. They're for theory, not use?"

"Really?" Kathy demanded. "We're learning about teamwork with Legos? Why not just give us Duplo blocks and rag dolls while we're at it."

Someone was having a terrible, no good, very bad day, for no reason she could figure. It was just that everything sucked and that went double for her classes today. They were all completely worthless.

That was fine! She didn't need to go to college or anything! "I should just take these goddamn things back to the Deadheads and spend my life making Lego bongs for assholes, since it's that or drug muling with the college I'll be able to get into with this transcript."

"Drug mule's not a bad way to make a living," Jack drawled, after counting to ten and reminding herself she shouldn't snarl at students even when they were being pissy little bitches. "Lego bongs would probably melt, but you wanna try to figure it out, go for it. What crawled up your ass today?"

Pissy little bitch was exactly the right phrase for it. Kathy would be doing so much apologizing for this the next week. Assuming she felt capable of showing her face to Jack ever again.

"I'm just appalled at the kind of classes this so-called school has to offer," Kathy snapped back. "I came here thinking it was a prestigious boarding school, not filled with idiots and misfits where we learned to tie-dye t-shirts and play with toys."

What kind of fruit did Jack like in her apology baskets? Just asking. For reasons.

Jack was partial to mangoes and pineapple, but she took being snarled at by kids as part of ongoing payback for the way she had treated various authority figures.

"So what's keeping you here?" she asked. "Causeway goes both ways. You could go to whatever school you wanted, if you don't like our classes or our people."

Hopefully Kathy would stumble over a tropical fruit basket and decide to send that out of sheer coincidence.

"Because as much fun as it would be to go back to my overbearing and racist parents, where I'm overlooked unless I'm being told to shut up, this place is marginally better." She sniffed, looking around. "Well, except for the curriculum."

Oookay. So, today, she was just going to get everything off her chest today. Good to know.

Jack's eyebrows went up. She was actually vaguely impressed: She hadn't known Kathy had this in her.

"Okay, what do you think we should do next week?" she asked. "My curriculum's flexible, and you're clearly full of ideas."

"Put us in a sim where we'll lose if we don't find some way to work together," Kathy said, thinking of last week's disastrous Survival class. "Like, we have to choose and agree on one possible option out of many and convince everyone to work towards that goal or not. Something with consequences we can see, something more than just not making a Lego model by following the instructions," she added rolling her eyes.

And then she could prove to everyone that it hadn't been her fault last week for everyone else being incompetent! They hadn't even thought about naming her a leader. Nope, they just went for two pretty white cishet guys to lead them. Total shocker there!

...Tomorrow she would be so glad that she kept this rant between her teeth. It would give her less to writhe about in a welter of agonized embarrassment.

Anders -- if he understood the term -- would have pointed out he was not actually het, but that was perhaps beside the point.

"Hey, you have a half-decent idea there," Jack said. "Have to admit, I expected you to sputter and die. You're full of surprises today. I'll think about doing something like that next week."

Build a scale model of the Normandy out of Legos without killing each other or throwing too many blocks.

"So. I'm good with helping on fucking anything today," Barry said looking pretty relaxed in his tie-dye shirt. "Maybe we split things up? Some people work on the foundation and we divide the more complicated elements up?"

Once we tag in.

Jack had borrowed a handful of Legos and was using them to build a variety of not-quite-obscene shapes.

Korra was happily building an igloo out of Lego, though she ended up bending tiny little icebricks as most of them were too square.
