"Welcome to Ink & Holes." Yup, another e-mail went out that the class was meeting somewhere outside of the school grounds. "Everybody got those ID's we... ahem? Cool. Look around at the flash. Talk to the tattoo artists. I want you to walk out of here with at least some mehndi, henna or stick-on. Let's see some self-expression here. Or, if you want to pierce yourself, that's cool too." She looked around for Cecil and pointed to him. "Dude, they have animated tattoos!"

Okay, not quite the eldritch kind he was hoping for, but still.

"Look around, knock yourself out, we're getting ice cream afters."

"Okay, dudes. What do you want to do next week?" Kenzi licked her butter-pecan almond-cream waffle cone. "Learning how to break into cars? Dance? Music? I wanna know."

Yes, she had ideas for each of these already.

"Music!" Karina said brightly. And predictably. "Or dance."

She frowned slightly.

"Unless you've found a way to make those somehow illegal."

... Sorry, Kenzi?

Kenzi grinned. "Wellllll, I'm sure I can leave it open so part of it isn't. Although really, Karina, isn't there anything you'd risk jail for?"

Karina stared at her. She wondered if--no, considering the source, it probably was a serious question, not a joke.

"No," she said warily. "Nothing."

"Not even true love? Or to save a life? Or the best fun ever?"

Admittedly, Kenzi could arrange that last one a lot more easily than the first two. But seriously!

"... those are your priorities?" Karina shook her head. "No. Not even. No amount of fun is worth breaking the law."

She wasn't sure she believed in true love and, well, being a Hero meant that she had... options for saving lives.

"Well, yeah. Maybe not entirely in that order." Kenzi cocked her head. "Why, what are yours? I mean, I'd do anything for Bo or Toby. Or Sparkle. Or Cecil, probably, I mean, he is my ex-husband." There were other people on that list too, but those were the first few that came to mind.

"My career is my big one," she said, narrowly resisting the urge to shudder at the fact that, oh god, the teacher had been married to a student, oh god that was so wrong. "And I guess somewhere after that come family and friends."

And her life sort of dribbled down around the bottom of her list. Karina was totally on board with risking her life and limbs for her dream career.

"Oh...kay." Well, OtherKenzi would've done a lot for her dance career? "Somewhere after that? What's your career?"

"Music," she said shortly, bristling at the 'oh... kay' bit.

Karina was terrible at emotional things. Kenzi was lucky she'd even mentioned her family and friends as a priority.

"Singing? Playing? Composing?" Wasn't she a little young? Ah well. "So you'd break a law for music?" Mischief-face was back. "Gotcha."

Yeah, you may regret mentioning that at some point, Karina.

"I'm thinking dance next week, though. Probably." She paused. "Maybe you can be TA next week. Look out for people! Come up with alibis!"

"It depends on where you live," Cecil pointed out. "We could go someplace they are." If she really wanted to do illegal things.

"No, no!" Karina said hastily. "That's okay. I like them nice and legal. That's great!"

A beat.

"... are they really illegal in some places?"

Cecil shrugged. "Everything's illegal someplace, right? And I guess there are places like in ~~meta for~~ ~~weird Night-Valean version of~~ Footloose."

"I don't think I can really answer either way," she said slowly. "I mean, I know... here. And home. And whatever terrible planet Master Skywalker drops us on and tells us not to die while we're there."

Which wasn't doing wonders for her sense of adventure.

"We should go someplace really different, then!" Cecil said enthusiastically. "Someplace with nothing at all like here or your home!"

He looked to Kenzi for suggestions.

Who was thoughtfully licking her cone. "Hmmm. We did Vegas. Peter's come is kinda meh... Ooooo." Her eyes opened wide and she looked thoughtful. "I know this really awesome pub up in Canada, with lots of different species. But I'd have to talk to Bo about being Security for us if we went there!"

Oh god. That was the last thing she wanted.

Karina was giving both Cecil and Kenzi doubtful looks now. "And will this trip be legal?"

"Neat!"

"It'll be legal. The owner's this guy who used to work the Portalocity hub here."

Maybe not entirely safe, if she got to pull this off. But legal!
