Choose Your Own Adventure, Thursday afternoon

Kenzi had sent the students (there was no way she could think of them as 'her' students) an email last night, telling them to meet her at the bus stop early for class.

"Field trip day!" she caroled. "We're going to the Graffiti Warehouse for an art day. There's a body painter there who's providing props, so if you want to paint up and photograph yourself against his backdrops, knock yourself out. There are mural-sized canvases, so go crazy. Only thing you can't do that I actually don't want you to do is photograph other people's art, 'cause that's sketchy without their permission, and I'd like to go back there again sometime."

She gave them a cherubic smile. "There'll be another event after we get back."

Kaylin was not at all sure this was legal and thought perhaps she'd be best served by not participating.

"Not coming along?" Kenzi looked a little wistful. "You sure?"

Kaylin had gotten most of the blood and dirt off, but she was definitely still looking a bit on the pale side. "I think since I'm sort of supposed to be like your police, maybe I shouldn't do stuff like this. Plus," she admitted. "I think I just want to go sleep. For maybe a week or two."

"Enh, okay. Fair enough," Kenzi allowed. "We don't want you falling off a fire escape or catwalk or something... you're going to be a cop? Really?"

Now you're just making her sad for you.

Kaylin looked at her oddly. "What's a cop? I'm going to be a Hawk. Someone said it was like your police."

"That's slang for police. Like I guess Hawk is for you, maybe? Cops patrol the streets, stop you from, uh, well. Yeah, the graffiti, for starters."

Oops?

"Oh... Okay. Except Hawk isn't slang. Hawks are from the Hall of law that investigates crimes. The Swords keep the peace and the Wolves go after those stupid enough to run. It's our title sort of."

She sighed. "And I kind of thought maybe the painting on things wasn't okay. I'd hate to have to arrest myself. But it's okay. I won't tell anyone about it. I just better not do it myself. I don't think the Hawklord or Marcus would be very happy about that."

"You gotta do, or not do, what you gotta do. Not do." Kenzi nodded, looking regretful. "So you wanna be a detective-- that's what they'd be here. Police detective." She pursed her lips. "As crimes go, graffiti's waaay down the list, but yeah, probably still illegal." She grinned unrepentantly. "But hey, I'm a miscreant, I admit it, and as long as no one's getting hurt.... So your Hawklord or this Marus, they'd get a report from someone if you got caught?"

"Ooooohhhh, yeah," Kaylin said. "And Marcus would threaten to tear out my throat - he's a Leontine, so while he mostly means it, he probably wouldn't actually. And I'd definitely be put on report and the Hawklord would be very disappointed and that's almost worse than Marcus being mad."

She considered for a moment. "No, it's definitely worse than Marcus being mad. So, even though it's probably not a big deal here, I better not."

"Fair enough." Kenzi grinned, not being one for peer-pressure on students. (Except her best friends, of course.) "We'll take pix and send you copies!"

"Pix?"

Really, this place was so confusing. Every time she thought she was getting a handle on it, something happened to make her realize just how much she still didn't understand.

"Photos-- photographs?" Kenzi held up her phone, and showed Kaylin one of herself and Cecil painting earlier in the day. "Short for pictures."

She wasn't even telling her about that Youtube account yet.

Kaylin's eyes went wide. "It's like a mirror. Except it's small. How do you connect to the Records from here?"

"Wi-Fi," Kenzi said without missing a beat. "It's in the air, or something. And satellites-- uh, big metal boxes floating around the planet. Everything's all connected." She paused and added, "Not that I'm sure what you're asking, 'cause we never call them mirrors,"

Also, that explanation probably was missing something as well.

"Wow..." Kaylin considered this for a moment. "Very strange. Can anyone get one of those little mirror - things? Though they're probably way too expensive anyway."

"Oh sure," Kenzi said, breezy. "I mean, they ain't cheap, but you can save up, they sell them at Turtle & Canary, all different colors, and oh! Hey, look, it has games on it!"

Watch the birdy, Kaylin! ... and the piggy!

"Plus I can call people on it and tell to come pick me up from the bar."

Bo loves when she does that!

Hmmmm... she'd have to think about that. They had given her some discretionary funding for things like clothes and things other students would have and there was her allowance...

She stared wide-eyed at the game. "Those are... I've never seen creatures quite like them. They're moving pictures, right? Not real?"

"Nope. Animation-- you guys don't have anything similar?" Kenzi checked. "You're seeing about, oh, I dunno. A hundred or so drawn pictures all fluttering together to make it look like it's moving. That's the best I can explain it. Or a million, I'm not real clear on that." She cocked her head. "Pretty sweet, hunh? Most students have them for emergencies. You know, in case class gets cancelled, or we have a crisis or some other crap , so they can get a message fast."

Her fingers flew over the little keyboard to send a note to Toby:

DRINKS AT CARITAS TONIGHT, Y/N?

"For emergencies," Kaylin said thoughtfully. "I think I can sell that. Marcus and the Hawklord wouldn't want me to not have something that was necessary in case of an emergency."

"Totally! And you can get news, and music, and hey, information for classes."

Never let it be said Kenzi wasn't for convincing authority figures to dole out the cash.

"And you get contact info for other students, so, way easier to coordinate classes." Kenzi paused. "I'm sure there's other stuff to talk to them about it, but mostly I use mine for games, cat videos, and taking pix of people when they don't know I'm there."

Kaylin grinned at her. It was hard not to grin at Kenzi. "If I can talk them into it, will you teach me how to use it?"

"Not a problem at all," Kenzi pledged. "They're fun, and way easier than you'd think. Tell them your teacher said so!"

Aahahahahhahahahaha!

Kaylin grinned. "I think I will."
