How to Be Awesome, Tuesday, Period 3

Kate waved at the students once everyone had made their way into the classroom and taken their seats. She herself was of course sitting on her desk. Because sitting behind it was just... not for her. "Hi! Before we get started on today's actual topic, just some quick administrative stuff." Because she was a grown-up and was organized like that. Or something. At least she was faliling internally less this week. "First off, Ichabod is my new TA for this workshop. Secondly, my office is number twenty six, and I'm trying to get into the habit of being there on Wednesdays, if you have stuff you want to ask or talk about outside of class. Or if you just wanna bring me decent coffee."

Hint, hint.

"So, anyway. Um, last week, we did the ever popular intros thing and kinda scratched the surface of what makes you awesome. Starting next week, we're gonna start covering more specific situations and like, areas of life and whatever and how you can be awesome in those, but for today... We're still gonna stay on a more general level. Like, being awesome is all about the stuff that makes you feel good about yourself. Like, if you think back to last week, I asked you what you think is awesome about you, and most of you named a skill you have. Soooo, that's one thing. Or it can be how you look, or how you treat other people, or it can be just... a totally random thing you just did. Like, 'hey, I really worked my eyeliner perfectly this morning, rock on, I'm awesome!'"

That was an real life example. If anyone else wanted to compliment her on her eyeliner skills today, she was more than willing to listen.

"So, today, that kind of thing is our topic. I want us to talk about the stuff that makes you feel good about yourself. And because that's way vague and I know vagueness is hard sometimes, I'mma narrow it down for you: let's come up with things you can do today to feel awesome about, here on this island of Fandom on May... whatever the hell today's date is." Like she looked at calendars. "2014, anyway. Or, if you don't want to talk about yourself, just think about something a hypothetical person could do today to feel awesome. That's the starting point for this session, but we can totally meander. And totally don't be afraid to comment on each other's stuff. As long as you're polite."

"I always feel good when I take care of myself," Rapunzel said, raising her hand a little shyly. "I mean, it can be as simple as making myself lunch, or stretching, or...brushing my hair."

She really did like to brush her hair. It took kind of awhile, but it made it gleam.

"But just doing something nice for yourself can be really...awesome," she added, feeling a little dumb.

"I mean, I like more complicated things, too," Rapunzel said, playing with her hair. "But I feel like ensuring that your failure rate is going to be pretty low means that you're more likely to enjoy yourself. I know I'm not going to mess up brushing my hair, you know?"

"Totally!" said Kate, because apparently this class was already making her some kind of a well of enthusiastic support. Who knew? "I mean, that's like my eyeliner example. It doesn't have to be anything that like, shatters the earth or anything."

"What's eyeliner?" Rapunzel asked, dropping her chin into her hands. Kate seemed like she Knew Things -- not just about this world, but girl things, and Rapunzel suspected this eyeliner thing might be both of those.

"I beat the hell out of the heavy bag," Flick said easily. "Made me feel pretty good about things. The heavy bag won't be messing with anyone for awhile."

"That's... maybe a little more violent than what I would've gone for," Kate hazarded with a slightly raised eyebrow. "But, acceptable. If it makes you feel good, it makes you feel good. And it's good that you can recognize that."

"It's good exercise," Flick provided in an effort to not seem so violent. "And good preparation because this island is fuc -- really strange sometimes."

He fell silent, looking thoughtful.

"That's a good one," Alana said, turning toward him. "I've been here almost a year and I'm not out of new stuff yet."

Kate nodded. "That actually sounds really smart to me," she shared. "I know I learned a ton when I was a student here." Not all of it good things, but she wasn't going to say that. She'd save it for a session on awesomeness in the face of adversity. "Keeping an open mind seems pretty awesome."

"Doing something physical sometimes helps," Alana said, running a hand through her hair. "Like, I had dance class yesterday, and I wasn't all that good at it 'cause I've never done ballet before, but I felt amazing for having tried it."

"So, kinda like Flick," Kate replied, nodding towards the boy in question. "Except with less violence. And, I'm biased as hell but dancing is pretty awesome in itself."

Or it had been before she'd abandoned it. Twice.

"So that's both doing something physical, and doing something new. There's awesomeness in trying something you've never done, right?"

"I know I always feel good when I have something cute to wear." Her collection of dresses and cute skirts was immense. Mostly because she was good at finding deals online.
