Community Service and You, Friday, Period 2

Class had technically been in session for a couple minutes by the time Bruce strolled casually into the classroom. Because that's where you were today, class! Don't worry, he would make it up to you in future classes.

"Good morning, everyone. In case you don't know me, I'm Bruce Wayne. Please, call me Bruce," he said. "In my world, I run Wayne Enterprises, the multi-national conglomerate my parents started. Frankly, I let other people worry about most of the day-to-day business there while I focus on my parents' other major contribution, The Wayne Foundation. A hefty percentage of Wayne Enterprise's revenue as well as my personal fortune goes into funding the Foundation's efforts in more charitable areas than I can count, including donations to this school."

"And that's why I'm a first time teacher who didn't get a teaching buddy," Bruce joked. It was funny to him, at least.

"What I really want to do with this workshop is try to make sure some Fandom High students get in the habit of giving their time to charitable efforts of all sorts, not just your typical Fandom alternate realities, invasions, and other things like that. We'll be starting out small with a bake sale next week, but by the end of the session, you'll be part of a gala event where you will be expected to schmooze with people to make sure they donate money."

"The proceeds from any fundraising activities will be split in half. Half will go to the school while half will go to organizations in need on the mainland. Just because Fandom is a weird neighbor doesn't mean it shouldn't be a good neighbor, after all."

"But for this week, we're going to keep it simple. Please introduce yourself, state why you're interested in charitable works, and if you have anything specific you'd like to do this session, please, let me know. I'm open to suggestions. After that, I have plenty of recipies if you want to get a head start on figuring out what you're going to make to sell at the bake sale next week."

"Oh, and if you have any specific questions, you can either talk to me or my TAs," Bruce said, grabbing a note from his suit's coat pocket. "They are Bay Kennish and Barry Ween. If it ever seems like I have no idea what I'm doing as a teacher, look to them and see how hard they're eyerolling."

Oh thank goodness. Finally a normal class, after whatever the insanity of her last class had been.

Bake sales and charitable works were such a relief after a class where the teachers attempted to score drugs from another student.

Thank you, Bruce. Thank you. You were making a difference already.

Kathy didn't applaud after his lecture, but she wanted to.

"My name is Barry and somehow I got signed up for this course," he said with a shrug. "Though I've done charitable acts in the past."

Granted it helped him but still... it was charity!

"As for ideas... I don't know. Fund raising for science extracurricular activities in inner city schools?"

"I'm Cosette," she said with a slight curtsey. "My father sees it as a very serious duty of his to do what he can for people less fortunate than we are, and he's taught me the same. Only you see, I don't have any suggestions just yet, because we come from a very long time ago and it seems more complicated now, so I'd like to learn so we can do a better job of it."

She paused just long enough to take a breath, then added quickly, "We aren't rich, though, not like you."

It wasn't like she knew that the reason her father had disappeared for a few hours the night before they left Paris was so he could dig up the ridiculous amount of money he had buried next to a tree on the road to Montfermeil.

"I'm Evan Sabahnur," Evan greeted, only slightly distracted by the possibility that there was a dinosaur eating the contents of his side of the dorm room at that very moment. "I'm taking this class because I really just want to use every opportunity I can to help other people."

And not entirely to prove that he wasn't evil, either.

"I, um, I know what it's like to feel alone when you desperately need somebody's help, and I don't like thinking that there are people out there who are in a situation like that, too, and I'm not doing something about it. And as for suggestions..." He pursed his lips a little as he thought. "Maybe working in a soup kitchen or a shelter or something like that?"

The students from the Jean Grey School had done volunteer work in one after the Phoenix went on something of a war-path en route to Earth a while back. It had felt good to make that little gesture to people who very literally had nothing left.

"My name is Marasiah Fel, and I can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to help people who need it in some way or another," she said. "I don't really have suggestions as much as want to find out where people think it's most needed."

Because, you know, she could maybe use that in the future somehow.

"My name is Kathy Li," she said when it was her turn. "I'm here because I want my commitment to social justice and social change to be worth more than reblogging a few things on Tumblr. People need help. I can help. It just seems obvious."

There. Not her most eloquent explanation, but she figured she got her point across.

"There are a lot of things that we can help with, but I'd like to focus on ones where...I don't know, where it's more than just money at stake." She frowned, trying to word things. "So, like, there are tons of charities that go to places and build libraries and schools for impoverished towns and that's awesome. I'd love to help build the Wayne Foundation library anywhere that needed one. But what if, instead of considering it an enriching and fulfilling activity for us, we instead used the monies or supplies to hire local workers to build it. Or to pay for apprenticeships or whatever so they could learn construction? Not just build a hospital, but train people to be nurses and techs. Give money to battered women's shelters, but also make sure they have counseling staff to deal with the mental and emotional scars that are left behind and to help the individuals learn and understand the behaviors that result in abuse. That kind of stuff." She tucked her hair behind her ear. "Not just focus on the immediate problem, but also the longterm and unresolved issues behind it."

Barry was totally fighting crime. Actually it was computer fraud. Someone had sent a phishing email to Barry's email account and Barry was teaching them a lesson through his computer tablet.

Bay had taken the TA slot as a way of proving to her parents she was doing something worthwhile with her time this summer, and she was glad to have it. Bruce seemed like the kind of guy her dad would like.

She made a mental note to call home this weekend as she supervised the class.
