Flavors, Food Choices, and Menu Planning - Friday, 4th period

"I hope you all are well-rested and well-prepared for this dinner," Hannibal started without preamble. "If you have any questions or encounter any problems, please ask for help - problems happen; it's how you deal with them that's important."

He smiled and held out a hand to indicate the man next to him. "For those of you who haven't yet met him, this is Mr. Wayne, the sponsor of the dinner, which will benefit his charity foundation." Bruce nodded and smiled. "I hope you will be pleased with the results," Hannibal told him. "Right now, we are readying everything we can ahead of time, to lighten the process later."

Have any last-minute freakouts...

Anything that doesn't have to be hot; won't wilt, melt, or become toxic sitting out; or needs time to sit, will be made now.

The chicken was going to be prepared later, of course. But Sparkle was going to artfully arrange flower petals in ice cubes, because, hey, water took time to freeze.

"A simple trick that adds a remarkable touch," Hannibal noted, nodding at the ice cubes.

"It's fancy," Sparkle decided. "I mean, like, the flowers keep pretty well in there, going by the test run."

He looked at the flowers thoughtfully, and then shrugged.

"Not sure if I want little flowers floating around in my drink, but I guess it's not much different from people putting, like, cucumber in water or something, is it?"

He'd always found that weird, too.

"Not far different, no." Excuse you; Hannibal put cucumber in water and it was awesome. "They do impart just a touch of flavor; it can be quite pleasant."

"Well, it's... pretty," Sparkle decided, using the word 'pretty' for probably the first time in forever. "I never would have thought of eating flowers, never mind decorating ice cubes with 'em."

"We're lucky that other people did," Hannibal said. "And that they discovered what was edible, so we're not left to wonder what might be poisonous; I doubt Mr. Wayne would look kindly on us killing his guests," he added wryly.

Why yes, he was curious how Sparkle would react to a joke about that; why would you ask?

Sparkle's reaction was mostly just to wrinkle his nose a little, directing his attention back to the ice cube trays.

"Yeah, it doesn't tend to sway people towards donating to charity," he replied. "Did Wayne ever say what sort of charity this was for, anyway?"

Wonderful; it was good to know Sparkle was ~~repressing~~ adapting so well.

"This particular meal, I'm uncertain. I know his foundation works with any number of charities, though." Hannibal smiled. "I remembered he had thrown banquets like this before, and it seemed a good enough excuse for your final."

Sparkle nodded a little. It seemed to make sense enough, anyhow.

"It's, like, community stuff, right? I guess this particular community kind of does need all the help it can get."

Sparkle sometimes had a gift for understatement.

"Last class, huh? No more cooking next time around?"

"Not next semester," Hannibal agreed. "Music Appreciation. After that...well, perhaps art. Never fear - I will never abandon food," he said, smiling. "But I couldn't have a cooking class when my prize pupil might not be there for it."

Sparkle twitched a little smile at that.

"What, Zhari?" Yeah, he knew Hannibal was talking about him. "She's leaving, after all."

It was on the radio, and all. Though, he supposed, the broadcast note was about Sholeh.

"Not Zhari, though I will miss her as well." Hannibal patted Sparkle on the shoulder. "Have you decided yet about the workshop?"

"I've been thinking about it," Sparkle admitted. "Even had a talk with the school counsellor about it, you know? She figures it's a good idea, too."

Er. Paraphrased. A lot. They were talking about Electroclash, after all.

"Not really like I have anything to lose."

"I'm glad she agrees. Have you spoken to your caretaker yet?"

Sparkle nodded a little, eyes on the flowers again.

"Yeah, he likes it, too. He's glad I gave him the heads-up, gives him a chance to look at the program, get an idea of what I'd be doing there. At first he was kind of iffy about letting me lose a summer term here, like he thinks the school has been good for me, you know? But I pointed out that the workshops here are kind of just glorified summer camp anyway."

"Good." If Lewis had refused to allow Sparkle to attend, it would have been much more difficult. "It would seem it's unanimous, then. With one abstention so far," Hannibal teased him.

"Yeah, yeah," Sparkle replied, and he couldn't help but smile a little. "I'll do it. Not even to prove everyone wrong, either. I'll do it because it sounds like a good time."

So... there?

"The very best reason." Hannibal squeezed Sparkle's shoulder again. "Let me know if you'd like a coach or assistance before the audition, though I'm certain Count Dracula or Mr. Starsmore would be willing to help, if you'd rather."

"Pretty sure the Count is expecting, like, theatrical greatness from me already," Sparkle sighed, running his hand through his hair. "I auditioned for that thing back when I was going by Sparks and talking about how awesome my family was. I don't want to ask someone for help who expects... that."

If that made any sense at all. For Sparks, the theatre had been a passion. For Sparkle, something that piqued his interest. Something that held promise, maybe, but he was approaching it from a completely different place.

Hannibal nodded. "He would probably understand, but it might be somewhat awkward. Well, as I said - let me know. I'm willing to be a supportive audience, too, but I doubt I have the right sorts of experience to help much."

Unless you needed to act harmless and congenial; he was good at that.

Well, it was good that Hannibal was, at least. Because Sparkle sucked at it.

"Yeah? Because I'd take a supportive audience with opinions over acting at myself in the mirror, and all my cat does when I perform for him is yawn and beg me for food."

Hannibal chuckled. "That sounds very like a cat. Of course; one thing I have in abundance is opinions."

Also money. And bad habits.

Sparkle had two out of three. That was a good start, right?

"And you're way less likely to trip me up and demand I feed you," Sparkle replied, smiling a little. "See, you're a way better audience."

A very good start. Hannibal would be happy to help with all three.

"On the contrary, I'm more likely to feed you," Hannibal pointed out.

Feed him to who?

"Really, that still means I win," Sparkle decided. "Are there, like, any scenarios where this doesn't work in my favour?"

That probably included ones where he ended up eating people. Sorry.

"None that I can think of."

Except the eating people one. Details.

Rilla was carefully sugaring her violets and preparing her mise en place for the rest of her meal. She would hate to disappoint Bruce.

He's here! And he's pretty confident that he can cook chicken without accidentally killing anyone.

Pretty confident. Yep.

Hannibal was confident in him! He would be there as backup, after all. He would never want to accidentally kill anyone.

OOC, participation at the dinner is completely optional, of course; feel free to handwave you were there! Or handwave you weren't, if you want Hannibal to flunk you. ;)

Lalala THIS WAS ALWAYS HERE. Sigh.

Last time I post while exhausted, doing my nails, and playing GW2, I swear.

Bruce was here strictly as an observer. He wasn't much of a chef himself - thanks for making that pointless, Alfred - but he did like to see people working hard toward a good cause.

If anyone wanted to talk to him about that good cause, whether or not something looked good, or what have you, he was available.
