Advanced Criminal Justice, Monday, Period 3

"Your final shouldn't come as a surprise," Batman said. The Danger Shop had a familiar look. They were on a rooftop, there was a table with weapons, grapple lines, and - if you looked past all that - dark red cell phones. "Despite certain events that interrupted the cohesion of this class, I think you all have a handle on how to best use your skills and knowledge to handle problems."

"In this case, the problem is simple. Bane, a bruising mercenary with genius intellect and a system to pump a drug called Venom into his body to increase his muscle mass, strength, and durability, has kidnapped the mayor's daughter and you've tracked him to the house just below us." It was a two-story house. Investigation would show there was a crawlspace, and no full basement. "You've discovered that he's in that building just below us. Bane has some number of guards with him in that house. Use your strengths. Do your job. You'll be graded on how well your choices pan out."

Evan glanced Karina's way, and then, a little more quietly, and more than a little awkwardly, he set the grappling hook back down on the table and spoke.

"I'm worried that we'll do something stupid and she'll get hurt," he admitted. "This is a hostage situation, and there's a super-powered evil genius in there holding her hostage. He has to be anticipating that someone is going to try to rescue her. Especially if he's from a reality with heroes like Batman in it."

It was nice that he'd put the hook down, but she still wasn't coming any closer. If Karina found that awkward, well--no, she didn't. Sorry not sorry, Evan.

"Which just makes this whole scenario that much more inappropriate for us," she said, then sighed and grudgingly added, "Scouting out the house is probably the first step. Finding some way to get the blueprints would be even better, so we'd have a layout, but I don't know that this simulation stretches that far. The second step is probably locating where in the house the mayor's daughter is being held. Depending on where she is, it might be possible to get her out without anyone being wiser to the fact they've lost their hostage."

Hey, it was like she knew what she was talking about!

Very nearly, yes! Evan tilted his head thoughtfully, and then waved toward the house.

"I can scout which room is which, easily enough," he noted. "I mean, I don't exactly have to go inside in order to look through windows that don't have the curtains drawn."

It meant using his powers, but there had to be some situations where being a freak wasn't a bad thing, right?

Yeah, Karina was getting the 'using the powers thing'. On the other hand, this was one case where he using his meant she could probably get away with not using hers.

Karina warred briefly with her scruples--this was sort of underhanded, even if only she knew it--and caved.

"Okay," she said reluctantly. "I can cover for you, just in case someone--"

She paused.

"Did Batman say we couldn't just call the cops?"

Didn't that count as doing their job?
