Buckle up, kids. Dr. McCoy had a gross one today.

The Danger Shop was well-lit and had some flat surfaces. Inactive blank-eyed practice people sat at each one.
"Today's stitches. You'll be actually stitching up an arm wound, so the faint of heart beware. Though I don't think you'd still be in this class if you didn't have the stomach."

He used one of the practice people himself to demonstrate. They had a cut on the back of their arm. He showed the class how to clean it, and how to insert a needle into the subdermal layer, maneuvering it back out to the other side as a holding stitch. After going across the wound, he showed them how to create diagonal stitches zigzagging back across, and then how to tie it off.

"Cleaning it out is the most important part--use disinfectant, if available in a med kit, and never seal a foreign object under the skin. Partner up, give each other a hand. All your patients should be programmed to have similar wounds, so it will look a lot like what I just did. Steady hands are key."

"Bacta," Cade said. "Um, think of it as magic blue stuff. It heals most wounds without major scarring if you get it seen to fast enough." He pointed to a scar on his arm. "Of course, if your employer's a cheap karking asshole, you get a scar."

"Neat! And ugh. Employers, right?" Cecil rolled his eyes. "Mine are pretty hands - or whatever - off, but some people...

All told, Station Management wasn't that bad when they were staying in their office.

"Exactly," Cade said, waving over one of their test subjects. "I'm looking for a different job when I go back home."

If you could really call "piracy" a job, Cade.

"Medicine?" Cecil asked, getting a needle ready. "Or was this just to get tips if you're out of that bacta?"

"Tips," Cade replied. "I tend to not really do safe things."

Because Cade made bad choices.

"Is there anything safe?" Cecil asked with a shrug. "I mean, life's the most dangerous thing of all."

"True enough," Cade agreed, "but I was a pirate before coming here. There are safer professions."

"Probably," Cecil agreed. "Although I suppose it depends on how good a pirate you are." He held out the needle. "You want to go first, or should I?"

"Good as in 'getting a lot of stuff' or as in 'having a strong moral whatever?'" Cade checked. "And go right ahead."

Cecil hopped over to the fake person, took their arm, and started disinfecting it.

"Good as in 'not getting killed or severely wounded'," he answered. "I would imagine a strong moral code isn't a job requirement."

"Pretty much a job hindrance," Cade said with a little snort.

Cecil nodded in agreement. "Unless your moral code says that piracy is good," he pointed out. "Then you'd be fine!"

He eyed the wound. "Does that look clean enough?"

Cade gave it a long look. "Give it another wipe since you've got enough stuff. Infections hurt."

Cecil wiped it a bit more. "So what were you thinking of going into instead of piracy?"

"I don't know. Bounty hunting, maybe?" Cade said.

"Is that much less dangerous?" Cecil asked doubtfully.

"Not really," Cade said, "but I'll be sure to buy my own bacta."

"And now you'll know stitching, just in case!" Cecil started in on the fake person's arm. He did a decent job, but his stitches may have been a bit more...artistic...than Dr. McCoy's.

Cade snickered. "Combining medical stuff and body art?"

"Just because you might be hurt's no reason to be boring." Cecil rolled his eyes. "One of the versions of me had a lot of really neat tattoos," he added a bit wistfully.

"You can still get some," Cade said. "There's a place here on the island that'll do it. I've gone there twice in two years."

"I've been thinking about it. Do they have the moving kind? I've seen some folks here with just...static ones, but I don't think I could make up my mind enough for just one thing."

This was probably not a surprise.

Cade sighed and pulled up the back of his shirt to show his pink glittery "TOTES" tramp stamp. "It sort of moves?" he offered.

He really needed to get that thing removed.

"Oh, that is nice!" Not quite what Cecil had in mind, but not bad. "What does 'totes' mean?"

"It's slang for totally if you get bit by a gremlin and think you're a girl from California, apparently," Cade grumbled. "Karking gremlins."
