Soc. of Violence: 2nd Period

Grissom brings his class to the A/V lab next door, and sets them each up at a computer work station.

Each has a browser window open to a page with various "police videos".

"This content can be disturbing, so if you don't want to watch them, you are under no obligation to do so, and may return to the lab to sit quietly and do some reading. But I'd like your reactions to this kind of footage ~~and feel free to handwave a video not on that site, you know the type~~, please."

Homework: "Next week we will have a guest speaker in class, who has a background in both law enforcement and security. I'd like you to prepare a few questions for this speaker, and you may include issues you are concerned about on the island. Any questions?"

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"Today, we're going to talk about magic. At this point, a conversation on whether magic does, or does not, exist, would be rather silly," Grissom smiles in the direction of a few students in his class. "However, understanding how magic is generally perceived off the island could be helpful."

"Next Monday, I will be setting you up again in groups to work on a project in this field. Therefore, all I'd like you to share in class today is what you are interested in studying and pursuing further, by way of knowledge. Think in a sociological frame of reference. Magic and its involvement with religion and spirituality? How we treat those who believe in magic, or say they practice magic, or in our cases, without a doubt practice magic? Ethical and moral guidelines surrounding the subject? Historical significance? Inside the subculture of those who practice magic, or those who are exposed to it? Or any other topic that you wish."

"No homework tonight, have a good weekend."

Even Grissom winces a little at the sound of several police videos going at once.

Phoebe signs ins.

Piper signs in.

"The media never seems to get tired of police car chases," Piper said, rolling her eyes at the news footage she was watching.

Veronica signs in right after Piper since they walked to class together.

She leaned over to see what Piper was watching and shook her head. "It reminds me of the OJ trial a few years ago. I was young, but I remember my dad watching the car chase intently on TV."

"I think the whole country was watching that car chase intently."

"I remember thinking it was weird how slow they were going. Didn't seem like much of a chase, you know?"

Bel watched multiple videos. "These are so cool!"

Lee signs in and feels a little ill, a little transfixed by the violence. "I'm...conflicted."

Peter signs in and watches some of the videos. A lot of them were no worse than what he had seen firsthand in New York, but that didn't make them any less unsettling.

Krycek signed in, then watched the videos rather impassively.

Shep comes in whistling and/or singing, "Abra, abracadabra... I wanna reach out and grab ya!" He's not singing at Grissom. Or anyone in particular actually.

When the sheet comes around he signs up to study the very thin line between magic and advanced science.

Marty signs in and lists that he'd be interested in the historical significance of the topic.

Mac is here, and ready to catch up lots of workwork. She signs down to look a little closer at the reasoning behind the negative views attached to the practise of magic.

Lana signs in and decides that she would be interested in studying the connection betwen magic and spirituality.

Piper signs in. She is interested in magic's involvement with religion and spirituality.

Walter signs in and opts for going inside the subculture of those who practice magic.

Jake is having a 'everything is happening too early' day, therefor he shuffles in, carrying coffee and signs up for historical significance and what not. He attempts to stay awake for the lecture and more or less succeeds.

Phoebe signs in and wants to further study the ethical and moral guidelines surrounding magic.

Bel wants to know how people determine what is good magic and what is black magic.

Phoebe keeps watching Cole out of the corner of her eye.

Cole's gaze drifts occasionally over to Phoebe.

Phoebe flips him a note.

I'm going to tell Piper why.

WHY???

I'm not going to hide anything from her...not any more.

If I'm going to help protect you, I'm going to need help. I'm sure you'd rather me ask Piper than anyone else, yes?

You can't. You're not strong enough.

Phoebe did a headdesk for a moment and anyone near her might have heard her mutter about all men being this stubborn.

Look, I can either tell you what my plans are or I can go behind your back.

I know I can't stop him or protect you alone, but I have to try and help somehow --- especially since it's a god chunk of my fault.

Just what do you think you and Piper can do? Piper can't freeze him or blow him up, it won't work.

I don't know.

Broots signs in and puts himself down for the study of the treatment of those who work with magic.

Angela signs in and notes that she's interested in studying the culture of people who use magic.

Rose signs in and puts herself down for the theory of magic.

Cordelia signs in ~~even though she was supposed to be away~~ and opts to study moral guidelines as pertaining to magical practice.

Jaye signs in.

Stark signs in, and notes he'd be interested in studying magic and its involvement with religion and spirituality.

Paige signs in and states she's interested in looking at the persecution of witches through out history.

Lyta signs in, and makes a note that she would be interested in looking at social acceptance of magic, mainly as a device in folklore and legend. She thinks it will be an interesting tie-in to her Arthurian and Celtic classes...and keeping things close together right now is a *very* good idea ~~especially after the mun has like lost the past two days to pointless meetings -- gaaaah~~.

Grissom is behaving himself, so there are no snacks to be seen. But he's in a great mood anyway, so stop by if you need him ~~for your nefarious doings.~~

"Professor Grissom?" Lee says, moving up to his desk. "Hi... I've missed a lot of class in the past two weeks due to ~~omg RL OF DOOOOM~~ various circumstances both excusable and inexcusable...what kind of make up work would you like me to do?"

Grissom rolls his seat back a little, adjusting his glasses.

"Well, we covered Mass Murder in the past week, so why don't you ~~handwave~~ write me an essay on an example of genocide, and we'll call it ~~emo~~ even."

"Done. When would you like the essay, sir?"

"Before Spring Break, please. ~~Just 'turn it in' next class or whenever.~~"
