If there was anything amiss, Kaidan'd been spending too much time off-island to notice. There was no particular urgency in his bearing as he met the students just outside the school; in fact, he was smiling. "We're going to do another obstacle course today," he said, "Except this time, we're doing it outside. The set-up is pretty simple: I want you guys to do a lap around the old part of the island as fast as you can."

"The only catch is that, where possible, you need to use your powers to get around. I don't care if that means setting up an illusion of yourself doing the track, or using an elaborate series of transformations to parkour around the buildings. Just use them."

A pause. "But don't take any stupid risks," he added. "If you're not sure you can make something, don't. And don't use offensive powers, or you'll be endangering someone else."

He tapped his omni-tool, displaying a map. "This will be your course," he said. "And to sweeten the pot, the first person here gets a free pizza next week."

He wants you to go where?

Will stared blankly ahead. An obstacle course would merely be a nuisance. He didn't see the point of continuing on with these classes when there were bigger things he could be doing but he didn't dare disobey.

So, he was there. Sitting very still while he waited for the lecture to end.

Oooo, this would be fun! Like Evan's morning training, but in a group!

And for a grade!

SCORE.

Oh, there was going to be so much pent-up frustration after this class. Jackson continued not to know why the hell he'd been signed up for a class specifically for powered kids, but that hadn't stopped him from trying to compete so far and it wouldn't stop him now.

This was going to end not so great for him.

Kathy...really wasn't sure about this. There had been the few times she'd run really fast, but she still wasn't entirely convinced that that hadn't been some kind of fluke.

This would be a good chance to test it out, wouldn't it?

Speed over the lawn and through the gate. Or climb over the walls if you're feeling it.

Climb the walls? No way. Evan was going to just step over the walls. Having stretchy limbs was going to come in super handy for this.

Okay, so both times she'd ended up blazing by really fast, she hadn't been focusing on running at all. The first time she'd been afraid, the second, she'd been listening to music.

This time, she was going to try to do it all while paying attention. It didn't count as a power if it only happened while you were distracted, right?

...That it, if there was anything at all.

And now to head down Apocalypse Ave! Or mantle along the sea walls, which is definitely an option.

Ahahahaha, running on seawalls. Sure. She was just going to keep running down Apocalypse at a disappointingly normal pace.

Reassuringly.

She meant, reassuringly.

Or find a really clever way to go around them without technically taking Griffin Way.

The Rocky Bits threw Kathy off. She went running over them--and then she went falling over them.

And then she went bouncing over them.

"...What?!" she yelped.

Unlike the last time, in the Danger Shop, Kathy was able to get her feet back under her in a fairly short time. She'd slipped, landed on her hands and turned that into a kind of handspring. She barely touched the ground for the rest of this leg, springing up into the air like a bouncy ball.

Through the North Gate and take a left turn through the trees.

Another few huge, bounding leaps got Kathy through the North Gate and, lord help her, she was laughing. Laughing. Sure, part of her was terrified and part of her was wondering how this was even possible, but more of her was just giddily elated at this. It was like flying and gymnastics rolled into one. And it was fun.

It was only when she'd landed on the ground and noticed that the trees were approaching far faster than she'd expected that she realized that, once again, she was blazing down the marked path far, far faster than she should be.

Too bad she didn't have a pedometer. She'd really like to know just how fast--TREE!

And she was bouncing again.

Back to the lawn near the school again - where this time, Kaidan's set up several targets.

Hit them in whatever way makes the most sense to you (there's a stack of pebbles available) and tag out as impressively as you want to.

If Kaidan hadn't specified that they weren't to use offensive powers, Evan would have just zapped his targets with his eye beams.

As it stood, a good wind up and then a punch that had his arm stretching all the way to the target from where he was standing was going to have to do. Stretch Armstrong, eat your little corn syrup heart out.

Spin kick! Spin kick! Handspring! Vault!

It was surprisingly easy to take down targets using her gymnastics moves, especially when she was moving at...however fast she was going. Those targets went down.

Crash on the lawn and have a sandwich. Kaidan's brought a couple.

Not that Kathy knew it, but she was easily running in excess of thirty miles an hour when she got back to Kaidan. And that was because she'd slowed down.

"Did you see me?" she asked, breathless. "How fast I was running? How much I was bouncing?"

And then she was abruptly sitting down and reaching for a sandwich. She was suddenly exhausted and ravenous.

He's still hanging around.

Ah, every time I look at those Mont St. Michel pictures and remember how many stairs there technically are...
