Classic Video Games ; Monday ; Period 1

It was time for class once again and Riley's video game setup was all ready to go!

"Today, we're gonna be playing Doom," he began once everyone was all ready to go. "Doom's a 1993 science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter video game by id Software. It is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in the video game industry, for having ushered in the popularity of the first-person shooter genre. The original game is divided into three nine-level episodes and distributed via shareware and mail order. Little bit different than things these days, right? Can you imagine having your game divided up like that?"

He chuckled before continuing. "In Doom, players assume the role of a space marine, who became popularly known as "Doomguy", fighting their way through hordes of invading demons from Hell. As a sign of its effect on the industry, first-person shooter games from the genre's boom in the 1990s, helped in no less part by the game's release, became known simply as "Doom clones". Its graphic violence, as well as its satanic imagery, made it the subject of controversy. And that hasn't really changed at all today either. People love to look to video games for controversy. So, let's play some Doom and shoot demons and be glad we're not the Doomguy, dealing with this on the daily."

With that, the lecture was over and it was time to get the gaming on.

Abby... kind of missed most of the lecture, sliding in to her seat breathlessly as Mr. Poole talked about how people loved to find contreversy in video games.

Literally breathlessly, even. Where the hell was her inhaler? She rummaged through her backpack, coming up with it and taking a few frantic puffs. Once the whole breathing thing was taken care of, she slumped down in her seat, trying to look as nonchalant as possible.
solarhippie: ([neu] Unsure.)

She could look as nonchalant as she wanted. She'd already attracted Karolina's attention. She leaned over with her eyebrows raised, and kept her voice down.

"Are you okay?"

Well, so much for slipping in unnoticed. "What? Oh. Fine! Just, you know. Breathing. I like to do that sometimes." The problem was that unfortunately sometimes her lungs didn't.

Karolina gave her a little smile. Almost like encouragement, even though that wasn't really something breathing needed, usually.

"Yeah, I think it's generally pretty good for people."

"Right?" Abby grinned back. "Did I miss much?" With her luck, today would probably be the day this class decided to go heavily academic.
solarhippie: ([neu] Yeaaah I am not sure.)

"Not much," she replied, glancing over at their esteemed teacher. "Doom, shooting game, sounds kind of terrifying."

She was a superhero. This did not mean she was fond of violence. Even when it was all fuzzy pixels.

"Sounds... fun?" Abby said dubiously. Her violence threshold pretty much hit its limit at cross-checking, to be honest.
solarhippie: ([neu] Do you need advice?)

"I'll probably fail within the first two minutes, anyway," Karolina offered.

She was actually going to scream the first time anything even remotely surprising or scary happened.

"I doubt I'll be much better," Abby said. "Honestly, I usually end up giving up and making Stiles get me through the hard parts with these sorts of games," she added sheepishly.
