Did the Danger Shop look an awful lot like a classic gym hall? ...Yes, yes it did. Okay, Kaidan didn't look like your typical gym teacher in his Alliance blues, but he was holding a ball in one hand.

"We're playing powers dodgeball today," he said. "You're all allowed to use your powers on the ball - not on each other. Danger Shop safeties are at their maximum, so the ball's not going to injure anybody and the room should step in if it looks like you're going to hurt each other, but... be careful either way. Okay? Okay."

He told the kids to line up, then divided them into two teams.

"For anyone who doesn't know this one yet - if you get struck by this ball, you're out of the game. The first team to knock their opponents out of the game entirely wins. It's that easy. Using your powers to hit the ball is allowed. So is dodging the ball using your powers. Just no injuries, okay?"

He threw one of them the ball. "Get started."

And with that, he was going to back up and make sure the protocols that would throw up a shield on any student who might be in danger of getting hit by someone's power... still worked. (They did. Thankfully.)

Celia was going to do her very best to hide in the back, eyeing the ball warily. She didn't know if she was going to be able to find enough control to do anything with the ball, let alone keep it from hitting her.

Acknowledging her...problems, as it was, was difficult. She would never understand what possessed her to sign up for such a class.

Evan was pretty certain dodgeball was actually a torture method devised by some very sneaky supervillain somewhere in the hopes of slowly draining the souls of the good and the innocent, so it really didn't surprise him much to see Celia trying to hang around near the back.

"Hey," he greeted, smiling faintly. "Never played dodgeball before?"

"No," she said, eyes wide. "This is barbaric. Why would anyone devise a game where you're trying to hit another person with the ball?"

Celia wasn't much for violent sports. Just wait until she discovered modern wrestling.

"I think it's supposed to be good incentive to get people running," Evan explained, "and... throwing things. And aiming? Mostly I think it's just a kind of sadistic way to get kids to pick on one another in grade school gym classes."

Far off? No?

"That's what it seems like," Celia said with a frown. "What would keep stronger, crueler students from singling out the smaller ones?"

Absolutely nothing, Celia. Welcome to elementary school gym class.

"Mostly? Stronger, kinder students sticking up for them," Evan replied, frowning thoughtfully. "Um... if you like, I can try to keep any of the balls from hitting you. I've got a pretty good reach."

The benefits of being a living spaghetti noodle.

"Really?" Celia's face melted in relief. "Are you sure? It wouldn't be any trouble?"

She wasn't worried about getting hit, exactly, so much as -- well, when she was in pain or experienced anything strongly, she didn't know what would happen to the people around her, usually. Better not to take the chance.

"No trouble at all," Evan promised, shrugging his shoulders a little. "I can stay near you, and then if any of the dodgeballs come flying our way, I'll catch them. It's easy."

If nothing else, he'd be in the way to take the hits, most of the time.
