Coping With Change, Friday, Period 3

Literally the only clothing that Jonothon had been able to find today in his apartment was his old Generation X uniform. The one he couldn't take seriously, because it was crimson and mustard-coloured, with a big bloody X on his belt. At least the boots had been tolerable, he supposed. And Emma had let him incorporate his jacket into his own costume. But. Really.

He couldn't quite figure out, himself, if this was somehow better or worse than the Hawaiian shirt bandages he'd been wearing last week.

//Since most if not all of you are probably too excited about break to pay attention to a proper lecture,// he began, standing behind his desk in the hopes of at least obscuring his belt some (it didn't work), //we're going to keep today's class simple. Escapism. It's perfectly natural, it's perfectly healthy, just so long as it doesn't ultimately get in the way of your dealing with life. If you're running on pure emotion and can't use logic to save your life, if you need to calm down some before you can properly apply yourself to fixing a problem and nothing is in immediate danger of irreparable damage if you do, then yes, pick up a book, or go to the cinema, or play a video game or listen to music or dance or do what you need to do in order to get yourself back in a functional headspace. So long as you're doing it in order to get yourself back to a place where you can deal, as opposed to using it in order to escape from ever having to deal, it's fine. It's good. By all means, take some time to yourself and recharge your mental and emotional batteries some.//

This was possibly his shortest lecture yet.

//All of that said, movie day. I even brought popcorn - the microwave kind, don't think I'm ever more fancy than I need to be - and a few bottles of soft drink if anybody likes. For some reason or other, the only DVD I could find in my apartment was Alice in Wonderland, and I had an old friend who would be personally disappointed in me for showing it to you all, but it is an excellent example of escapism unto itself, so...// He shrugged. //Sorry, Alice.//

The tights. Oh god, the tights. Dom couldn't look away from the unintentional anatomy lesson.

But a movie day was never a bad thing.

Joker sat on his hands, in order to stop himself from taking a picture today.

And he snickered.

Much as she had yesterday when she stumbled across bare-chested Will, Celia was going to politely look everywhere but at those tights.

For goodness' sake, Jono. Her sensibilities.

Eleanor was never going to understand fashion. Or people wearing tights that distinctly showed everyone their ... assets.

Or the idea that dark red and mustard yellow were an acceptable color palette, either.

Right there and then, Kathy made the decision that if this weird thing she was going through did turn out to be some kind of power manifestation, she was never, ever going to wear tights. Or use a color scheme that looked more suited to a hot dog.

Jono might notice that Mercy was doodling on her notebook. If he was particularly observant he might notice her writing things like:

Mercy Cornick

Mrs. Mercy Cornick

Mrs. Samuel Cornick

Mercedes Athena Cornick

Etc, etc...

And there were also some hearts and stars and rainbows and intertwined M's and S's...

Why would anyone gawk at the clothing? They looked sort of stylish, if not terribly comfortable.

What did Cecil know? He wore furry pants!

There was a reason the classics were classic. Joker settled in with popcorn and soda and enjoyed the show.

Near the beginning of the movie, when Alice ate the "Eat Me" cake and started crying big blubbery tears, he couldn't resist pointing out "Wow, she's not coping with change very well."

Joker tossed some popcorn into his mouth. "Curiouser and curiouser."

Movies were still a novelty to Celia, as was popcorn. But for once, she already knew this story.

"They're leaving quite a lot out," she noted, about halfway through. "And I feel like there's significantly more songs and less math than Mr. Carroll might have intended."

"I read the books," Eleanor said, watching the movie with a decided frown. "I don't remember her being quite so ... vapid."

(forgive me I had to)

This was one of Kathy's least favorite Disney films. It was just so creepy and everyone was mean.

On the other hand, at least it wasn't Fox and the Hound.

Cecil was watching the film.

And taking notes. You never knew what might come in handy.

Cecil thought the movie was a pretty good manual on coping with change.

He also sort of liked Jono's outfit.

"So, superhero, huh?" Joker asked. It was a reasonable guess, given the outfit. Plus, the red conveniently color-coded him as the meta for Raphael of a given super-troupe. "Never thought I'd meet a real one. You guys have power rings? Color-coordinated giant robots?"

Re: Talk to Jono!

[identity profile] fly-so-serious.livejournal.com 2014-02-21 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"X is a good letter, though. Very mysterious and superhero-y. I'm sorry about the robots, though. That... pretty much blows." Which he'd experience firsthand, in a little over a decade. 'With great power', though, I guess?"

[Pretend there's some way to meta Spider-Man's catchphrase without mangling it beyond recognition.]

"So, no fashion designers in the superhero community, huh? Or... anyone who ever went to art school, even?"

Re: Talk to Jono!

"Black leather's a classic for superheroes," Joker commented. "Don't you have some sort of... I don't know, billionaire philanthropist who's secretly on your team -- sorry, ex-team -- or something? "'Cause, I mean, like a few hours of time from a Hollywood costume designer won't come cheap, but it could do wonders for the whole franchise."
