Fun & Games, Monday, Period 2

Class was in the Danger Shop again today, which had been programmed to look like a forest. A pathway of ropes and pieces of wood began a few feet behind Jack and continued up, then high through the trees.

"Hey there," Jack said, in a rather pinched voice. Being a mom was exhausting. "Today we're doing a ropes course. It's pretty much an obstacle course, except you're way up in the trees for a lot of it. If you're afraid of heights or you're one of the visiting kids, there's something that might be more your speed over there."

She pointed to a kid-sized obstacle course playground in a clearing to one side.

"But if you aren't a wuss, helmets and safety gear for the big course are on those shelves. I'll go first so you can see how everything works." And because she liked showing off. Hush.

She paused as she strapped on her gear, indicating a rather weary-looking blond nine-year-old. "That's Val. He's mine. Don't mess with him."

And with that, she was off to the ropes.

And Val, who can't wait to get home.

"Yo," Cade said to Val with a wave. "Want to come with me to work after? I'll get you lunch and everything."

What a father figure.

"Sure," Val said. "As long as you don't 'forget' your wallet this time."

"Would I do that more than once in the same weekend?" Cade asked.

"Probably not now that I told you not to," Val allowed. "Can I help fix stuff?"

"Sure," Cade said with a grin. "You can charge people double if you want."

Val ginned back. "Have I told you lately you're my favorite dad?"

So maybe he'd inherited a little of his parents' taste for crime.

"Am I your only dad?" Cade checked.

"That's what the paternity test said," Val informed him with a straight face. "And mom blames you for her stretch marks all the time."

"Sounds like domestic bliss," Cade said dryly.

"I know," Val said, equally dry. "I figure it's giving me lots of good stories for when I grow up."

"If you write a book, I demand residuals," Cade said, unsurprisingly.

"Already promised those to Mom," Val said.

He was kidding.
