The Occult | Period 1 | Tuesday

Class was being held in the Danger Shop today. It would be made abundantly clear why momentarily. For now, Paige was standing at the front of the class, waiting for them to settle before starting in on the lecture.

"Today," she started, "we're going to talk about demonology. If the word doesn't give it away, demonology is the study of demons or beliefs about demons. It deals with both benevolent beings that have no circle of worshipers or a limited amount of worshipers in that they're still below the rank of gods. It also deals with malevolent beings of all kinds, which is how the majority of people see demons. They're bad guys, they're monsters and if you don't kill them, they're gonna kill you."

It wasn't always true but Paige could see why it was the typical belief. She had enough memories of the Emim to know that there was no way those monsters were benevolent in any way, shape or form.

"Demonology isn't something that can be defined simply though. Demonology is different in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and Satanism. For the purposes of this class, we'll take a look at those who command demons to do their bidding. Not really such a good idea. Most often, when people are commanding demons, they're commanding the demons most often mentioned in Christian demonology. Real quick, demonology from a Christian point of view tends to deal with the Bible the interpretation of those scriptures, the scriptures of early Christian philosophers and hermits, traditions, and legends incorporated from other beliefs. Those who command these demons don't necessarily worship them but seek to use them to obtain their goals. Some people see that as smart, some people see it as disrespectful and probably a main reason why some demons get pissed and revolt. A lot of it depends on the practitioner of the magic that conjures the demon and the goals they're seeking to obtain."

Paige paused and crossed her arms. "Today, you're here in the Danger Shop to meet a demon or two. I'm sure most of you have dealt with this place before so you know it's not real but please be careful anyway. This is more an exercise on how you deal with different kinds of demons, since no two are the same. Scenario wise, you guys are those who have to deal with practitioners of demonology raising a demon for his or her own needs and then not being able to control the demon's power. These guys aren't all nice but we'll see which kind of methods you use to get past them. Ready? Let's go."

For all that Sholeh had asked for a lecture on demons, actually finding out that they were going to have one and meet demons had her quietly freaking out.

Well, externally quiet, anyway.

::Oh no demons she's having us meet demons what if they know me what if they recognize me what if they tell on us we're going to get kicked off the island they'll come after us with pitchforks and torches like in Professor Dracula's movies oh no oh no oh no I just wanted to learn more about this I didn't want to meet anyone, we're gonna be in so much trouble and it's ALL MY FAULT.::

Sorry, Toby.

Look, Toby was actually pretty familiar with that sort of fear. Sure, he knew he wasn't a demon, but he'd spent his childhood doing his best to avoid letting anyone know anything about his abilities. And even then, he'd fucked up a few times. One foster family had even sent him back to the system because they were convinced he actually was possessed by something.

So while they waited for the demons to show up, Toby was just gonna sidle up to Sholeh and give her a look that hopefully conveyed the whole 'I've got your back' sentiment.

Sholeh was just going to edge closer to Toby and whisper, "Do you think it'll be obvious if we leave?"

'We' as in her and Toby, really. Not Sholeh and, saaaaaay, her two sisters that shared her body?

"Probably?" Toby whispered back apologetically. Times like this, he really wished his ability worked both ways. "But it should be fine, right? I mean, they're not even real."

"That's true, but..." Sholeh shrugged. "I'm not comfortable around demons. Even fake ones."

In a tiny mental voice, she added, ::We kinda are some.::

It was scary to say, but she figured Toby would figure it out soon enough, if he hadn't overheard it already.

Demon or not, even if their association had gotten off to a bit of a rocky start way back in that first class they'd had together, Sholeh was one of the sweetest people Toby knew. He hadn't talked to either of her sisters much, but from what he'd, um... overheard... they seemed nice enough too (though one of them was definitely scrappy).

"I had foster parents send me back because they thought I was possessed," he confessed. It wasn't exactly the same, but in a world without actual demons, it was about as close as you'd get.

Yeah, scrappy was one word for Zeela.

"We don't want to be mean or evil or bad or anything," Sholeh assured him. "It's just what we are. The Tryad, I mean. As a race. But we're really perfectly nice!"

Other than the occasional killing of someone's sibling for having the ill-grace to fall in love with an outsider.

Oh, well. Other than that, yeah, sure.

"I've never had a problem with you," Toby said firmly. Aside from aforementioned somewhat rocky start, but in retrospect her reaction was completely understandable. "And I'm willing to give a piece of my mind to anyone who does."

What? Other cultures didn't have a law like that?

"Thank you," Sholeh said, giving him a tremulous smile. "I appreciate that."

=Yeah, he's not bad. And it's nice having an audience. Hey, you single?=

::Star-eyed goddess, Zeela, shut up.::

She was giving Toby a pleading look now. "Just ignore her, okay?"

Okay, not quite playing. But, feel free to mod your demons in the Danger Shop, mod your weapons, etc. If you'd like me to toss a demon at you, lemme know and I will!

Alec was in his element here, which made some amount of sense since his entire job was to kill demons and all.

He'd be happy to lend a helping hand to anyone who looked like they could use one.

Sholeh shuffled forward, holding a knife the way she'd seen Caius drill Zee and hoping that she looked more imposing than she felt.

"Err, go away!" she commanded. If you ignored how her voice trembled. "Just go away and we can all pretend this never happened?"

Good show, Sholeh.

Uvall (http://www.deliriumsrealm.com/uvall/) appeared before her, a man who looked no different than she but she knew things she didn't want anyone to know.

"Go away?" He sounded normal as well. "I was summoned. Why would I want to go away?"

"Because it isn't very polite to be dragged out of your home when you were, you know, just...doing...things? Like maybe napping or getting dressed or reading a book? Wouldn't it be nicer to just get back to what you were doing?"

TREMBLE BEFORE THE WRATH AND MAJESTY OF DEMON HUNTER SHOLEH.

"Oh, but I'm here now," Uvall said, sizing up the tiny person in front of him. "And so are you. This is far more interesting than what I was doing. What's your name, little girl?"

"Umm...Sholeh?" And then she winced. "I mean, Betty. My name is Betty."

You probably weren't supposed to give your real name to demons, were you? Even if they weren't real.

"Sholeh is a greeting of my people. It means hello."

It's okay, Uvall. Even she wasn't buying this.

"You're lying," Uvall said politely. He took a few menacing steps closer to her, eyes gleaming. "Don't lie to me. It's not nice. I can see where you've been. And I know where you will be."

Sholeh could have tried to fend him off with her knife. She chose discretion instead, stumbling backwards to try to keep the distance between them. "You--you don't know anything about me!" she cried. "We're nothing like you!"

Way to keep a low profile, sweetheart.

"Uvall sees all."

He hadn't even meant to rhyme.

"I know your past. I know your future. I see it all and I've seen you there. Keeping secrets, aren't you?"

"N--no?" Sholeh's hands were trembling, as was her voice. "Go away! Go back home! You're not w-wanted here!"

There. Maybe she could hurt his feelings and send him home crying?

"...this is very pathetic," he said, shaking his head. "From what I've seen of your life, you are not the strong one. There's someone else in there who is, isn't that right?"

Oh good. Sholeh hadn't been scared enough before. But now he was talking about her sisters and he had mentioned in there and that meant he knew and, Triple Stars, was he gonna tell everyone? About everything?

She whimpered and backed up a few more steps. "Don't you talk about her," she whispered. "You don't get to talk about her. You're not real! You're just an illusion, a fake, a phony. You can't hurt me. You can't even touch me."

Too bad it wasn't what he could do that she was so scared of.

"Am I?"

Uvall stalked after her, eyes glinting with delight at her fear. "You don't know what I could pick out of your brain, child. Do you want me to pull you apart? Rend you limb from limb?"

Sholeh feebly batted at him with her knife. "If you know what I am, then you know that even if you tear me apart, you'll just have to deal with my sisters. Including the fearless one that can kick. Your. Ass!"

In a bit, Sholeh would realize that she'd cursed in class and cringe. But right now she was actually showing the tiniest bit of spine and that kind of held most of her attention.

Uvall laughed but didn't advance further.

"How brave of you," he quipped smoothly. "I see your future. And mine as well. Today, you are lucky."

He stepped back again.

"Tomorrow, you might not be."

And then he disappeared, effectively ending the simulation for Sholeh.

Sholeh had never, ever been so happy to be released from a lesson. Ever.

She was just going to go over to one side of the Danger Shop and sit there quietly until the end of class.

This was the worst.

God, I had weird dreams last night.

I would love a demon to menace and terrorize Sholeh. If it can pick up on her fears somehow of being 'discovered' all the better!
