Chemistry 102, Friday, Period 2

"Okay, you want explosions? You're gonna get explosions," James said with no prompting to start the class. He was at the front of the lab with two plastic tubs filled with water and two balloons with plastic tubes attached to them. It was time for an experiment.

"This is nice and easy, surprisingly safe for your hands, and it can make you feel like you have super powers or something. But first I'm going to show you something boring." James grabbed one of the balloons, stuck the tubing into the water in one of the tubs, and opened up a valve on the tube. Right away the water started bubbling. "Both of these things have soapy water in them. Add some oxygen and hey, you get bubbles. Because that's how soap works."

James dipped a hand into the other tub for a second just to get it wet before he put it in the bubbly tub to pick up some bubbles. With his dry hand, he grabbed a butane gas lighter that had also been on the counter, lit it, and touched it to the bubbles. "See? Boring. The oxygen-filled soap bubbles pop."

He jabbed the oxygen balloon with the flame, too, and it just popped with no fanfare. Not that music usually played when balloons were popped. But it would be awesome if it did. "At least that was kind of fun," he said before putting th lighter down and picking up the other balloon. "This one has two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, which is a combination that's explosive as hell, so when I make bubbles in this other tub, we can expect to have some fun."

The second tube was put into the second tub and a second set of bubbles was created. "Everyone should either have earplugs in like I do or you should be covering your ears right about now."

James dipped his wet hand into the new bubbles, lifted a few up, and grabbed the lighter. Once it was lit and touched the new bubbles in his hand, a loud BANG could be heard and the bubbles went up in a fireball. "As long as your hand's wet, that's not going to do anything to you, but it's going to be awesome."

"As for this balloon..." James tossed it in the air above him and waited for it with the lit lighter. Once it touched the flame, a ball of fire the size of the balloon formed with a much, much louder BANG.

It surely would have hurt James if he hadn't used his superspeed to duck the fire. Once the flame was gone, he stood back up. "I've got plenty more of those and a large stick so you can poke the balloons with fire because your reflexes aren't as good as mine. Also? I'm a professional. Figure out how you want to spend the period from here. Do you want to feel an explosion in your hands? Or do you want to make a bigger explosion with a long stick? Your choice."
