Flavors, Food Choices, and Menu Planning - Friday, 4th period

"Today," Hannibal told the students when they'd arrived, "we'll be going over sweet foods. Sweetness can be a very good complement to bitterness; you're all familiar, I think, with sugar in coffee or in chocolate. The two types of flavors work well together.

"Sweetness is generally regarded as a pleasant taste, but too much is still something to watch for. A light, sweet glaze on meat can bring out its flavor, but too heavy a sweetness can entirely obliterate everything else."

He set out the dishes and explained them as he did so. "Unagi - freshwater eel - caramelized in a sweet glaze over rice. There is also a bit of salt to it. Sweet potato bisque, with pear, lime, and avocado. This has a little bit of every flavor, but the sweet is quite notable. Brown sugar meringue shards, roasted plums, and white chocolate sauce. This one has -"

"THE SNICKERDOODLES ARE MADE OUT OF PEOPLE!!!! PEEEEEOOOOPLE!"

Hannibal narrowed his eyes at the voice coming from seemingly nowhere. He looked around the room, face carefully blank, and glanced at the students to see if they had any ideas. When nothing else happened, he kept going, thankful he didn't actually have any snickerdoodles made for this class. Best to ignore whatever it was.

"This one has a bit of sourness to it to offset the sweet. And finally, organic rock candy." He smiled. "there is nothing in that but sweet."

He waved them toward the foods. "Eat them, become familiar with them, and make something of your own. Please ask questions."

It took Sparkle a moment to realize what was going on here but when he did, it was all he could do to keep from breaking into a cackle, right there in class.

He ducked his head and grinned, and if his shoulders were shaking in an effort to keep from being more disruptive than the disruption had already been, well, at least he was trying.

Sorry, Sparkle; as TA you were getting singled out, anyway.

"I take it this is yet another of the island's oddities?" Which hopefully didn't actually mean anything.

"I wanna say yes," he replied, a little grin toying at the corners of his mouth. "I mean, did you hear my radio broadcast yesterday? I had to listen to it again afterwards, just to be sure I wasn't losing my mind and hearing and seeing things that weren't there. But, I mean... whatever it is, it's new. I've never heard of 'voices from nowhere' weirdness before, but it's happening all over the place."

"I don't often arrive early enough to hear the radio." Hannibal relaxed a bit knowing it was apparently nothing specific to him. "Nobody knows why it's happening?"

Sparkle shook his head.

"Not that I've heard yet. I mean, it's been going on for a while, and no harm done or anything yet. But I'm kinda surprised people aren't trying to figure out what's up, yet. It's been around too long to just be random."

No, Sparkle wasn't taking it upon himself to go delving for information. Where would he start? But it still had him uneasy.

"I'm not sure where you would start looking into something like that." Hannibal gestured at the room. "It doesn't seem to have left anything behind."

"Dunno," Sparkle admitted. "When dangerous shit hits the island, people usually hit the library. But this seems kinda harmless. Annoying. Maybe kinda invasive. But harmless."

"Mm," Hannibal agreed. "Still, I wouldn't mind knowing what it is." The uncertainty was a little concerning.

"You and everyone else on the island," Sparkle replied, nodding. "It's not so bad when it's total strangers spouting random crap nobody really cares about. I'm gonna be pissed if the island decides to re-play the greatest hits of the shittiest moments of my life or something. That's nobody's business but mine."

Rilla's eyes went wide at the noise. Who would ruin a perfectly good cookie with people in it?!

Since Mavis had ruled herself out on Friday...

You better believe Sparkle was making a beeline for the unadon. Eel. Seriously. How do you say no to the opportunity to try eel?

And, he decided, as he contemplated trying to sneak seconds, he actually really liked it.

Billy tried a little of the eel - he'd had squid so he was curious how different it would be - but he was all over that potato bisque. Those ingredients just sounded like way too interesting of a combination to not have some.

Make sweet things! Ask more questions!

There was no such thing as too much buttercream, right? Sparkle had found a recipe for cupcakes, because... cupcakes, and he might have gotten a little carried away with the frosting.

A lot.

Look, it was raspberry buttercream and nobody could take this away from him.

It was too good not to use this line, since it was offered! :)

"Dr. Lecter?" After class, Zhahar approached him with uncharacteristic diffidence. "I think you've mentioned a time or two that you listen to people's problems? Is that true?"

Hannibal eyed her curiously. "Of course." He smiled. "It's my job, but I hope you know you may always come to me with anything you like."

"Even if it's not about school?" Zhahar asked. "I, umm, have a little bit of money saved. I could pay...?"

"I wouldn't dream of it," Hannibal answered. "Why don't we go to my office? I'll make some tea."

"Ooh, could we?" Zhahar asked, before biting her lip and trying not to sound so enthusiastic. "I mean, if you wouldn't mind. Tea sounds lovely."

"Of course." Hannibal picked up his things and waved her toward the door. "Please."

Who's already here because I forgot this earlier. Whoops?

Lookit Sparks! He's definitely here! And he has raspberry buttercream.

So. Much. Raspberry buttercream.

That really was an awful lot of buttercream, Sparkle. "Are you planning on a party, or just giving yourself a sugar high for an entire week?"

"If I sleep at any point in the next month, I haven't made enough icing," Sparkle reported with a grin. "This is awesome. Fruity buttercream."
