Class met in the Danger Shop today. It was set up to look like a forest. McCoy was chewing on a stalk of grass when the class came in. What a Georgian loser.

"Aren't you glad to get a break from the cold?" It was autumn in the fake ~~moddable~~ forest. Good time for a harvest.

"You might find yourself without food or water for a time. You're going to need to gather, in that case." He handed out a ~~hand-waved~~ sheet listing several edible roots, berries, and leaves.

"The good news is, even if you find something rotten, grubs are a good source of protein. I'm well aware your gag reflex might react, but they can keep you going when you need it most. If you find something fresh and have the time, cook it. Some things are poisonous only when raw. You'll lose some of the water, though."

Also some of the ick. Had anyone ever had raw beets? Yuck.

"Break up into pairs and find at least one source of fresh water, and one meal. You eat some grubs, you get fruit snacks at the end. Anyone touches the nightlock, they get an F." The nightlock stand-in was not actually deadly, but letting them think it was would keep them on their toes.

Contemplate the deliciousness of grubs.

Tastes like...chicken?

"I've eaten worse, but only because of a bar bet," Cade said, looking dubiously at the offerings.

"I haven't and I'm really not in favor of changing that," Bay answered, arms folded across her chest. "Besides, I already had breakfast."

"No room for delicious bugs?" Cade said, snickering. "Go figure."

"I know, it's sad I can't get over my anti-bug prejudices," Bay said. "It's a personal limitation."

"I didn't want to point that out, but yeah," Cade agreed. "How about roots? Do you have any vegetable-based prejudices?"

"I think beets taste like dirt," Bay offered. "But if I was starving I'd get over that pretty fast. What about you?"

"Oh if this was real, I'd eat all of this," Cade said, "because starving to death is a stupid way to die."

"Well, yeah," Bay had to agree, poking at a plant and trying to compare it to McCoy's handout. "Especially starving to death when there are a zillion things to eat around."

"Exactly," Cade said, shaking his head at what she'd picked up and pointing to something else. "Generally stay away from mushrooms. They're too easy to guess wrong."

"And if there's anything worse than starving to death, it's puking to death," Bay nodded. "I'll stick to leaves and roots. There should be some wild onions around somewhere."

"Just don't eat poison ivy," Cade said. "That'd just be embarrassing."

"Worst reason to have to go to the hospital ever," Bay nodded.

Cecil shrugged. He'd eaten all kinds of things; the only weird thing here was trying to find them in a forest. And then, when he did...

"These mushrooms aren't bleeding." He eyed them dubiously; he'd just picked them, they must be fresh! Maybe he'd stick with grubs instead.

"Do mushrooms normally bleed, where you're from?" Joker had to ask. "Because, I mean... they're mushrooms."

"Well...yes!" Cecil answered, a little surprised. "The fresh, good-quality ones, anyway. Do they not where you're from?"

"Mushrooms are fungus," Joker insisted. "They don't have blood. I'm not even sure they have sap."

Then again, he didn't know for sure. Wild mushrooms weren't exactly common in the carefully-groomed parks on the space station he grew up on.

"Are you sure what you have aren't actually mushroom-shaped animals?"

Cecil thought about it for a moment, and then shrugged. "They look like mushrooms, and we call them mushrooms. Mostly they're imported, though, so you don't see them growing." Because hello, desert.

"Oh, but I did uproot one on the overnight for my Not Killed By The Scrublands scout badge, so I know they've got roots!"

Joker just nodded. "I get the feeling that where you're from is VERY different from everywhere else."

"Not that I know of," Cecil said, "but I've been getting that a lot lately, so...maybe?" He broke the non-bleeding mushroom in half and offered some to Joker. "Want some?"

Joker eyed the mushroom warily. "Are you sure this one's edible?" he asked. And, y'know, non-hallucinogenic?"

Cecil shrugged and bit into his part. "It seems okay. Anyway, Doctor McCoy put it here. So if we get high, it's his fault, right?"

This? Was not a huge deal. It wasn't like Surreal hadn't eaten bugs before, when there'd been nothing else.

Still, she was going to stick with the mushrooms she knew weren't poisonous unless she couldn't find anything else. Just because she could and would eat them, didn't mean she wanted to do so.

Mercy'd learned more woods skills from Charles than she hoped to ever need to use. Fresh water and edible things were easy to find.

And just to prove a point to herself, she ate a grub.

Goose was not a picky eater and had eaten worse things before, so he didn't have a problem with eating grubs.

If she's here, and not too busy snacking.

Mercy had eaten a lot worse things than grubs, that was for sure. But she was kind enough not to laugh at anyone having a problem.

When his mouth isn't full.

Slimy....yet satisfying.
