Advanced Criminal Justice, Monday, Period 3

"As you surely realized last week if you tried different levels of opponents, the proper weapon wielded with skill can make a large difference in a fight," Batman said. Yes, that was why there were large tables with cloths over them on the rooftop today. And yes, the cloths were there so there could be a dramatic reveal of what exactly there was.

"The traditional criminal usually limits himself to a few standards. Guns. Knives. Various bludgeons, like baseball bats or crowbars. Maybe a garrote or rope, if they're a particularly nasty type," Batman said, pulling the cloth off of one table. He moved on to reveal the second table as he continued. "As we move past the traditional criminal to somebody trained in some form of martial arts or with a taste for something more 'awesome,' the weapons become more exotic. Swords, nunchaku, shuriken, axes, staffs, tonfas, maces."

"If you're really unfortunate, they're some kind of ex-military, in which case they may use larger guns, rockets, grenades. I've even dealt with tanks," Batman said and, no, there was not a tank on the third table. But the fourth table still put the rest to shame. "And then you get to aliens and time travelers. They mostly use laser guns. I don't know why they're so universal."

"All of this is just the beginning. A criminal, if they're clever or rich enough, can weaponize anything, up to and including other people," Batman said. "These are the tools of your enemy. While I've trained with many of them and used some of them in fights, I've never been a fan. Instead, when I truly need to use a weapon, I rely on this."

Batman reached into his utility belt and pulled out a thin, black piece of metal that was shaped like a stylized bat. Branding!

"This is a batarang. It's exactly what it sounds like," Batman said before throwing it to the left of the students. It curved in a wide arc around them before returning to his hand. "I've trained to be fast enough to outdraw someone with a gun, and there's enough weight behind them to knock a gun out of a person's hand. I have other varieties that are razor sharp...." Batman reached into his cape, turned, and threw a batarang so quickly that if anyone wasn't paying attention, they'd be curious why the first table was falling over after having two legs chopped off. "... and some that will explode." He drew from the belt this time, sticking the batarang into the third table. It let out a series of quick beeps before going off. The explosion was small, but it was enough to turn both the third and fourth tables into a mass of pixels on the ground.

"Non-lethal use, fast, bat-themed, and easy for me to mass-produce. They're the ideal weapon for me," Batman said, turning back to the students. "Your goal today is to find the weapon that suits you. None of these are real, and this is not a permanent choice. Should you change your mind later, you can use something else. But after today, during any fight-based classes we have, you will have the option of using your chosen weapon."

"My one rule: No guns," Batman said, reaching into his belt for the remote so he could get rid of the remains and weapons of all but the second table. "If you're familiar with guns or think they'd make things easier, too bad. My class, my rules. End of story. Pick something else."

He hit the remote one more time and another table - this one small and round - appeared next to him. He then reached into his belt and pulled out enough batarangs - not the razor sharp or exploding kinds - for everyone. "In addition, if you want, each of you can take a batarang. If you prove to me by the end of the semester that you can master it, I'll give you more. Otherwise, feel free to consider it a memento, or something for a time of need."

...

So... Karina was, like, super unenthused about this whole weapon thing. She stood near the table, eyeing it dubiously, and making absolutely no move to reach for any of the weapons.

A gun had been the only thing she was capable of using, even though she was more used to her guns, which were weren't much like normal ones at all.

What did teaching minors how to use weapons have to do with criminal justice anyway?

Evan found himself drawn to the assortment of swords on the table, picking them up, inspecting them, and then after a minute of consideration, seeing if he could replicate them by shifting his hands.

The swords were easy enough. The axes, too. Chains and batarangs were pretty much right out, though he suspected he could figure them out if he spent enough time trying.

Hmm. Maddie would have gone for a gun first, but since those weren't available, she decided to go for something bludgeon-y.

After getting a feel for them over at the weapon tables, Evan decided to go up against the dummies using a few options, getting a feel for how the sword swung, and the axe, and even giving a maul a try, mostly because he wanted to see just how much heft he could manage to swing with before he was risking his own balance, too.

If Evan had been aware that the narrative was comparing him to Thor, he'd probably spend so much time in tiny fanboy fits that he'd be easy pickings, weapon or no.

He was there if anyone needed him today, practicing his shapeshifting to see just how many of these weapons he could replicate with his hands.
