Literature- Wednesday- 2nd period

"All right, everybody!" Jess said, clapping her hands together when everyone had gotten there. Was she in Austen-period costume? Yes. Yes she was. Be glad she wasn't doing a whole character. "I hope you all read the meta for Emma over the last week, because if you didn't... well, we're going to discuss it anyway and you're going to be expected to participate so you'll know better next time.

"So, the meta for Emma comes to us from Jane Austen, who's had a lot of her works turned into movies, or had zombies added into them, and this book in particular got a 90's update that was pretty inescapable for those of us who happened to be in high school at the time," Jess said. "For today we're going to discuss the book, and you should all pay attention because you have a book report due next week and this discussion might help."

Jim hadn't read the entire book but he'd read enough to get the gist of it, at least. He was actually more interested in the costume, yeah.

Oh, was that a costume? Cosette had honestly not thought anything of it; it was a few years out of fashion by the standards of 1829, but she wasn't so knowledgeable about sartorial matters yet that she realized it. It seemed just about normal to her.

She had read the book, though. All but devoured it, as a matter of fact.

Not literally.

Jessica pounded the book out last week right after class so she'd have time to pound punching bags over the weekend. Somebody was studious as hell.

Of course, she wasn't in Victorian dress, so she probably lost the studious race.

Scott had watched the movie, which was just as good, right? In any case, he figured he was fine.

"If her friends were receptive to it, why not?" Jim shrugged. "If they didn't want her intruding, they should have had the guts to tell her so and then if she kept going, it was time to yell at her."

"I think it was awfully kind-hearted of her to try," said Cosette, who had absolutely no clue whatsoever about romance and therefore no idea whether everyone else would have ended up together otherwise.

Cosette glanced over and gave Rilla a grateful smile. "And they wouldn't have had to go along with it if it didn't suit them, would they?"

Somewhere out in town, Éponine was probably getting the inexplicable urge to roll her eyes so hard right now.

"They were given a backbone," Rilla agreed.

But then she came from a village with a long and successful history of matchmaking busybodies.

Cosette, meanwhile, had long ago mastered the art of getting her father to give in whenever she felt like it, and it wasn't as if Madame Thénardier had been timid or unassertive in any way.

"Yes -- if they didn't care for it, there was nothing preventing them from telling her so."

"Exactly," Rilla said, beaming at Cosette.

"All she did was screw everyone up for a while," Jessica said. "Frank and Jane were secretly engaged without her contribution, Harriet gets jerked around a lot before getting engaged to the guy who proposed to her early on, and Elton found his wife the second he got as far away from Emma as possible. The only reason I don't think she needed to mind her own business is because everyone turned out okay despite her, so at least they got some good stories about their friend with the bad judgment."

"I think," Scott said slowly, "that she was honestly trying to help, and I don't think I can find any problems with that. I really wish someone had pointed out how much help she wasn't being a bit earlier, though."

"I love your dress," Rilla gushed at her after class.

"It's a lovely colour for your features," Rilla said.
