Emergency Medical Situations, Wednesday, Period 1

Well, the school was big and imposing, but the classroom was what he'd expected--desks, chairs, chalkboard. In future weeks he'd need more floorspace and probably the Danger Shop, but for today this'd do just fine.

He wrote his name on the board--Dr. McCoy. Then he stood in what he hoped was a teacher-ly stance. What was he supposed to do with his hands? Okay. Just--

"Welcome to Emergency Medical Situations. I'm Dr. McCoy. Bit new to teaching, but don't think that means you can goof. The things you'll learn in this class could save someone's life. Hopefully the only time that'll be tested is the final exam."

The best McCoy could wish on these kids is to never have to face any of the situations brought up in class.

"First caveat of the course--these techniques I'm teaching are to be used in emergencies only, to tide the sick or wounded over only until they can get to a real doctor. Self-surgery is not a substitute for clinics and hospitals. People like me go to school for an awful long time to do this. Don't think this is a get-out-of-doctors-free card."

If he had a dollar for every homemade patch job that resulted in later complications he'd seen in his residency alone, he'd have paid off medical school by now.

"You're all new to me, so first day means introductions. Name, year, and an injury or illness you've had. I assume all of you have had at least a paper-cut and a cold, so you've all got something to share. Even tiny hurts can become big hurts if untreated. Last of all, if you've got any specific questions or topics you'd like covered, I'd like to hear that, too."

He waved his hand vaguely. "Oh, and if anyone would like to be a T.A., I'd appreciate the help. Just come talk to me after class. I also have office hours on Monday. Office #17, starting next week."

"I'm Atton Rand, Senior," Atton said, leaning in his seat in a way he really shouldn't be. "I've been in a few scrapes and I'd like to learn how to avoid bleeding to death."

"Bandaging and stitches, though the second you need a steady hand and some tools to do. Not always an option." McCoy had heard the 'in a few scrapes' euphemism a few too many times to let it slide. "Though, son, the first step might be to avoid those scrapes to begin with."

If McCoy had his choice, he'd be in a bubble, and any sane person would join him.

"My name's Mercy Thompson. I'm a senior and, well, I've been shot before," Mercy said, blushing a little. She'd been in coyote form and had her backside peppered with a shotgun blast. "I grew up in a pretty rural area and there were always lots of injuries. It would be good to know how to do basic stuff to help out."

After that the werewolves could pretty much heal themselves.

McCoy remembered what Jono had said, about these kids having to grow up faster than they should. "Bullet wounds are harder to deal without unless you're talking just a graze, but we can definitely go over some basics, and how to treat a victim for shock."

Teenagers shouldn't be getting shot to begin with, though.

"I'm Emma, I'm a junior," she said and shrugged. "And I don't know, just childhood bugs I guess, nothing serious." Which was good, since it wasn't like foster kids or runaways got good health insurance.

"Nothing serious, good." Very good, because the rest of the class' experience with gun shot wounds and 'a few scrapes' was kind of terrifying McCoy. "We'll go over small bugs as an aside--mostly what you already know, though. Fluids and rest."

"Hey, I'm Bay Kennish and I'm a senior," Bay said, chin in her hands and notebook open to a page only half-full of doodles. "My only injuries are the usual klutzy kid stuff. Um ... topic-wise, there are deaf people in my family, so I'd like to talk a little about first aid for people who might have a harder time communicating."

"Thanks for sharing, Bay," McCoy answered. "That's an excellent point. Too many folk don't get the care they need because no one understands what's wrong--might not make a whole class out of it, but communicating with people we might not immediately understand will be something I'll keep coming back to."

"Surreal, senior, and I've mostly been healthy," Surreal said with a shrug. Malnourishment totally didn't count. And she wasn't talking about the things that had happened after Titian had died. Not to anyone who wasn't Cara. "A few fevers, a broken bone or two when I was little, that's about it."

"How did Atton put it? Scrapes? Those, too, but I grew up with healers and know how to patch myself up."

"Jeff Moreau, and I'm a Junior. People call me 'Joker', but doctors usually call me 'Jeffrey', or just talk to my dad over my head. I've had... Oh, I don't know. Broken legs, broken arms, broken hips, fractured skull -- that was scary -- broken wrists, broken fingers, fractured vertebrae, broken ankles... It's been over a year and a half since I've broken anything major, so we're looking at a pretty good streak, right there."

Yes, Doctor, he was being coy. Pop quiz: guess the diagnosis!

"And I guess it's not a topic request, but more of a question: Are we only learning medical stuff? I thought the course description said something about being stranded on a deserted planet."

"Hi! I'm Cecil. I'm a freshman." Cecil thought about it. "I...don't really remember any major injuries?" He shrugged. "I had basic first-aid training when I was in Scouts, but you never know when you might have an emergency. I don't know about topics, though...anything with blood would probably be good?"

Usually after doing something heroic.

"I don't know if I have any real topic requests. I'm just hoping to learn... more. To be helpful."

"Shane Gooseman, Senior," Goose said, "I haven't really been injured except for getting some cuts and bruises," at least his Supertrooper bio defences actually came in useful for something, not that he was going to be sharing that information with the class.

"Marasiah Fel, junior, and I haven't had anything too serious." She'd died the once, but that hadn't really been something that could have been helped by medicine, and besides, he was new. "I'm here to learn about what to do in emergency situations of all kinds."

"I'm Cade," offered the heavily tattooed (you could see them because showing them off was more important than not getting frostbite in the cold, apparently, and Cade made good choices) blond with a bad goatee. "This is my last semester and I've been around some stuff, but nothing I couldn't handle."

Cade was totally the self-surgery guy, and there were some scars among the ink.

"I dunno...you know much about alien STIs? We should learn about those."

Mercy had enjoyed being a TA for her class on space and thought she might enjoy doing it again. Plus, she thought Dr. McCoy would be a cool professor.

"Dr. McCoy?" she said politely. "I'd be interested in being a TA if the position's still open."
