Armed and Dangerous [Tuesday, Period Four]

Bond had his class meet him in the Danger Shop, which looked close enough to the salle that the students might wonder why they weren't there instead.

"Good afternoon," Bond began once they'd all arrived. "I see a few familiar faces but for those of you who haven't taken any of my classes before, I'm Professor Bond, this class is Armed and Dangerous, and over the next few months we'll be covering various kinds of armed and unarmed combat. Which means a few points of order. One, I expect you to wear appropriate clothing for this class, which for the foreseeable future means loose, comfortable clothes you can easily move in, and closed toe shoes, as well as trying to avoid any jewellery that might catch. Two, while any weapons you use in this class will most likely be simulated, you will treat them with the same respect you would the real thing. I have no objections to those with experience showing off what they know, but no shooting apples off anyone's head or games of pinfinger."

"Speaking of experience, it's time for introductions, name, year, and what level of experience you have with fighting and with what weapons, if any, so that I can get an idea of where you all stand. If there's any weapon you have a burning desire to learn about, mention that as well and we'll see what happens."

Whoo, first week, so interesting.

Name, year, what fighty you can do.

"Flick. Junior," he started once the introduction train had made its stop with him. "I went to military school for awhile. Learned to fight there. No weapons, really. I prefer hand to hand."

Bond nodded as he listened to Flick. "There's nothing wrong with that preference," he said. "Though a familiarity with weapons can still be of use, if only so you can plan for what might happen if the other guy is armed."

"Yeah, I learned that the last time this island went insane," Flick admitted with a nod. "Guns aren't my thing but I'm okay with things like bats, pipes, and other things you can typically find around the area. If I use a weapon, I tend to go with things like that."

"The kind of things that someone armed with a gun might not remember to consider a threat?"

"Exactly," Flick said, nodding. "Always fun to surprise someone by smacking them in the chin with a hammer or a rock. They never expect it."

Bond smiled. "I'll at least know to keep an eye out for them when you're around."

He was only joking insofar as he had no intention of giving Flick any reason to want to hit him with either rock or hammer.

"Alec Lightwood. I'm in my last year. And I'm trained with most types of blades, but I'm partial to bows. Longbows especially."

Bond raised his eyebrows very slightly. "Bows are somewhat unusual for this time period," he said. "But they have some advantages, silent, lack of gunpowder residue, few metal parts depending on the kind."

Alec nodded. "And they can be fired from a distance, so you don't have to be seen."

"Hi, I'm Alana, I'm a sophomore," Alana began. "I did a little training with guns at my old school. Plus, I took Professor Hansen's class in hand-to-hand combat last semester."

"It's a start," Bond said, nodding. "A foundation gives us something to build from. Welcome to the class, Alana."

"Zee," she said when it was her turn. "I've taken a bunch of classes here. I'm okay with a bow, but I have the most experience with knives."

And, from her grin, they were her favorites, too.

"Dirty and up-close work, using knives, most people don't expect it from girls." Bond did not sound in the least disapproving, though.

"I like being what people don't expect," Zee said cheerily.

"Surreal, senior, and I prefer blades," she answered simply. "If I'm not allowed to use them, I am above-average in hand-to-hand and tend to get creative with improvised weaponry."

"As a last resort, I can always use my powers, but I prefer not to do so unless there is no other option." Because Surreal looooooooved to make people underestimate her. It was fun for everyone!

Would Surreal like to meet the tiny grandmother in charge of MI6? Bond had the oddest feeling they'd get along terrifyingly well.

"Well, I'd also prefer you not use them in this class." Mostly because he suspected that would be unfair to the other students. "Unless there's no other option. Good to have you back."

It was quite likely that Surreal would follow that tiny grandmother around like a puppy. And try to kill her a few times, just for the glee of getting her butt kicked by the aforementioned tiny grandmother.

...it was possible that Surreal was a tiny bit off, yes.

She simply cracked her knuckles and grinned. "Good to be back."

Considering that Bond was not-quite-pining over the fact M had him teaching instead of fighting people for her, Surreal was hardly the only off one in the room.

He grinned back at her.

"I'm Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "I'm a sophomore." And that was the easy part. She shrugged a little self-consciously. "I don't actually have any experience with weapons or much fighting. I've always had to do a lot of, uh, hiding, when things got dangerous. But I really want to learn."

"There's nothing wrong with avoiding a fight you can't win," Bond said, because it was completely different when he went on suicide missions, that was his job. "That way you survive long enough you have a chance of coming back later and winning it."

"But if I never learn how to win any, then all I'll ever do is hide."

"I never said you couldn't learn how," Bond said mildly. He wouldn't be teaching his class if he thought that. "But the first step to winning is learning to recognise which battles you can win today and which ones you'll have to bide your time on."

Raven nodded slowly.

A long game. Yeah, she could grasp that.

"Mordin, junior. Mild hand-to-hand training. Benefit from speed. No specific weapons training." Though he could probably operate a weaponized omni-tool attachment easily enough, if he had one.

Bond nodded, speed was good, your opponent being stronger didn't mean much if you got them first. "How would you say your speed and strength compares to what's considered human norms?"

"Much faster, much less strong. Less muscle density in salarians. Cartileagenous bones slower to heal." Though they'd have to catch Mordin first.

Bond considered this information. "We'll probably want to focus on extending your range and taking advantage of the speed then," he said.

"Agree. Logical to fire from distance. Optimize stealth. Personal safety." Mordin's people were innovators, and most of their weapons sought to overcome their physical disadvantage. Ranged weapons were good, as were biological weapons that crippled the reproductive abilities for generations after.

You know. Whatever worked.
