Advanced Journalism (Tuesday, February 21 - 2nd period)

Rita sat behind her desk.

No, not so much with the happy-looking.

"Good morning, Ms. Sullivan, Ms. Gilmore. Your assignment is a simple one. In class today, please write fifty words on why impersonation is wrong, or which circumstances might find it acceptable. Because we're doing this today, you have until tomorrow to turn in your assignment on campus couples. Questions?"

"Because he's my friend, and so even though he makes a very nice hat, I like him better as a guy?" Xander replied.

"But he can't eat. If he stays a hat, he'll never enjoy the deliciousness of, for instance, a yummy golden Twinkie again."

"Oh, come on -- have a little sympathy." Obviously Rory was right, and the only solution was the drastic one. Xander plucked John off his head, and placed him firmly atop Professor Skeeter's gleaming bleached golden curls. "See, John's a nice hat. Don't you want to be kind to the nice hat?"

Eight hours from now or so, Xander would be wishing with all his heart that he'd answered, 'Jake Gavin, ma'am.' But alas and also alack, he lacked precognitive powers. As well as basic deductive reasoning, at times.

So instead he sucked it up like a man; it wasn't like he hadn't been living in a fantastic detention-free dream for a semester and a half now. sooner or later reality was bound to catch up with him.

"Xander Harris, friend to hats and lover of Twinkies, but not the other way around, because that would just be weird."

Xander was quite the brave soldier, Chloe had to admit.

"Are you allowed to give detention to people who aren't in our class? Xander was only trying to help," she said to Rita, looking John over to make sure he didn't have any hat-parts still attached to him.

"Constable Fraser?"

She'd asked him something else-- something about his name, but it was kind of fuzzy. The question, though also possibly his name, at this particular second.

"He doesn't look much like John." Xander wasn't being deliberately obtuse; this was the natural home-grown variety. "Except for they do both have the really blue eyes thing going on."

"Mm, yes," Rory agreed happily, thinking of her interview. "He said the best part of Fandom is the library aides. I still can't believe he's that old."

"He's...really polite," Xander said, really politely. "He probably told the Swedish Chef that the best part of Fandom is the Cheekee Noodoo Sooppuh. But he can't possibly be that old. Not unless he's a vampire, and there aren't any polite vampires except maybe Vladdie." On some level he was completely aware he was speaking authentic frontier gibberish. Really.

"Vladdie's not really polite. Just wee and cute and unaware of the concept of manners at all," Rory said. "And Angel has his moments. But yeah, he let me wear his hat, and said that maybe Dief can play with Vladdie. Oh, and his favorite color is red. You can read all about it tomorrow. It'll be very exciting."

"Red. That's a shock. How'd you pry that deeply-buried secret out of him?" Xander wasn't suddenly wishing Jeremiah was a dog. Much.

"I asked," Rory said obliviously. "Just like how I asked to wear his hat. It was too big for my head though."

"See? He's just so nice," Rory sighed a bit dreamily. "To like, everyone. It's no wonder that like every girl has a crush on him."

"He does kind of work that combo of earnest charm and not knowing he's good looking," Xander agreed. "To girls. Who seem to dig that."
