Care for Magical Creatures, Monday, Period Four

The island definitely seemed... off, today.

And Thor wasn't just thinking of the strange silvery stuff that had been raining down from the sky (much of which was currently tangled in his hair, naturally). No, it was more like- the population had suddenly expanded, which wasn't unusual, except for the new semester was weeks away yet, and all of the new arrivals seemed to dress similarly. Of course, they'd mostly kept to themselves so far, but Thor was wary. Waaaary. And then there were the new objects popping up around town. Thor didn't trust them. At all.

In any case, it all was very distracting, and Thor's carefully crafted lesson (read: cobbled together via half-remembered tales from his childhood and checking Wikipedia to see how the Midgardian people had interpreted them) had flown out the window by the time he actually arrived to class.

"Something most odd is going on," he said in lieu of his usual greeting. "Have you any theories?"

Seriously, what's that guy on the radio up to?

"I don't know. But I don't like it."

Like a sane person. Karolina thought herself to be very much a sane person right now.

"Neither do I," Evan murmured. "Like the machine vending guns in the dorms lobby for less money than I've spent on a can of Coke at the movie theater before. Why hasn't anyone gotten rid of that yet?"

It boggled the mind, really. They made students check weapons when they came to the school for a reason.

Karolina shook her head and shrugged, because she really didn't know, but it was nice that she wasn't the only one worried.

Side product of being a teen superhero. And having had villainparents with good publicity.

"I'm so creeped out by that thing."

"I've been thinking about getting a hotel room or something just to not be near it," Evan admitted with a sigh. "Except I know I can't keep paying for one forever. But... the dorms are supposed to be a safe place. Even Wolverine's school doesn't condone the students running around with guns."

And that was something that Evan admitted grudgingly, yes.

"Some powers are weapons, though," Karolina replied, less because she wanted to argue that banning guns was hypocritical in such a situation, and more because, well, she'd been thinking about it since Doom's class earlier in the day. "It's still not right. But nothing about this looks right to me."

"They're only weapons if that's how you use them," Evan replied, furrowing his brow and frowning. "Guns are made to kill. That's all they're there for. I'm-- people with powers are not guns."

This was... kind of a sticking point for him.

"Of course they're not."

Karolina looked apologetic.

Yeah, even though she was a person with powers herself.

Evan turned a sour look down toward his knees.

"Putting guns out to level the playing field between people with and without doesn't make it better, either. There's a weapons store in town, there's no reason to have one in the lobby of a student dormitory. And the guns... they come from the same people who are invading the island. The bad guys want us to have them. Powers don't have anything to do with that."

"Sorry, I just ––"

Well, he was the one who'd brought up Wolverine's school, and then her brain had hopped on from there.

"Sorry. I'm just nervous. I didn't mean it like that."

"We're all nervous," Evan pointed out. "Even people with powers that are like weapons."

He was going to cling to that for a while. It was hard not to take that sort of thing personally after being kidnapped and tortured for a few days in an attempt to make a killer out of him.

... He was a little overwrought and probably missing a lot of her point, though.

"I know," Karolina said, though not snappishly. Not snappishly by anyone else's standards, anyway. "I'm one of them."

Sure, she used her powers for shields and flight and other defensive things, but she'd seen others of her kind use them differently when she's fled her world collapsing in on itself.

"Oh." Evan swallowed a lump in his throat, pulled in a deep breath, and then glanced up at her thoughtfully. "I'm sorry. I thought..."

She didn't have powers? Did that really make any difference?

He ducked his head again.

"It doesn't matter. I'm sorry anyway. Like you said... everyone's nervous. There's good reason for that right now."

Who doesn't trust what's going on, despite that totally reassuring radio broadcast this morning.

"Brother!" Why yes, yes Loki had picked into the money boxes. And procured himself a gun.

This was good news for no one.
