Modern American History- Monday- 2nd period
The students today were in the Danger Shop, which was made up to look like a small computer lab. You'd soon find out why.
"Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. And I know the holiday's just long enough to totally screw you up, but we've gotten to the 90's now, which is a decade that most of you probably have some experience with, so that should make it a little easier, right?" Kitty said.
"So first off, wow, there was a lot of violence going on. When someone videotaped a man named Rodney King getting beaten by cops in LA, the city erupted into race riots when the cops were let off. There were bombings in Oklahoma City and at the World Trade Center in New York. There were a lot of school shootings, including the one at Columbine in Colorado. There was even a bombing at the Olympics in Atlanta in '96. The Cold War was over and the Soviet Union was dissolved, but the US was acting as world police. We sent in people to help with conflicts in Somalia and Haiti, and when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the US sent troops there because we were worried that they'd go after Saudi Arabia. The war lasted from 1990 to 1991, and even though we won that one and Iraq went home, there's stuff that carried over into the next decade, because if you've learned anything from these wars, it should be that there will always be lasting effects.
"Mostly, though, what the 90's are remembered for are mainly things like the Spice Girls, boy bands, grunge and Tickle Me Elmo. Also, technology. Because by the end of the decade about fifty percent of homes had computers, and most of those were online. People were emailing, message boards were out there, and while I don't have sources on this I'm sure the flame war was born in this decade. So what we're going to do for the rest of class is to get you kids get on AOL and make your own Geocities webpage. I don't care what it's about. I left instructions on basic HTML by the computers there, and if you need more details, you can look it up on Alta Vista."
