Valentine's Day Dance. The Gym. 8.30 pm

The gym was decorated, the DJs were playing, and the punch was not yet spiked.

Fandom High's Valentine's Day Dance had begun.

Cole pulled Phoebe on to the middle of the gym as the song started.

Phoebe smiled as she danced with Cole, and fought down her growing guilt.

"I don't think I've ever heard this one."

"Me neither," Cole said, smiling, "but it sounds appropriate."

Phoebe nodded. "It's very pretty."

"Love you," Cole whispered. "I'm glad we're here."

This was something she could be honest with him about.

She met his eyes and nodded. "I love you, too, Cole. I'm glad I decided to come."

He didn't want to spoil the evening like he had Valentine's Day, so he didn't push her for any sort of commitment, just enjoyed the feel of her body against his as they slow danced to the song.

Phoebe laid her head on his shoulder as they danced. She had the pang in her again. She missed him, missed times like this. She missed just being them.

He wished Phoebe didn't think he had to choose between Angelus and her. He could have both, he was certain of it. He could protect her. But he was feeling pangs of guilt about what might happen to others. Price he paid for having a soul.

She ran a hand down his back. As much as she wanted to be with him, she couldn't as long as he was going to keep trying to bring Angelus back. Her conscience and her heart warred, but she knew that she had made the right choice. Even if she was willing to risk her own life, she wasn't about to risk anyone else's.

He bent his head and kissed her bare shoulder. He'd had the means to bring back Angelus; he'd had it for almost a week now. Yet he hadn't tried. Phoebe's safety meant the world to him. How could he risk it? How could he bring tears to her eyes if her friends died?

Phoebe murmured something and closed her eyes. The things that Angel and Veronica and Piper had said over the last few days were still in her mind. Angel had thought that Cole's love for her would be enough to stop his plans. Veronica didn't understand how he could claim to love her and be so willing to give her up. Piper wanted to know how come Cole was so willing to get her killed.

Cole tightened his arms around her. How deep was his love indeed. Deep enough to forget what he was? It didn't change the fact he was a demon. He could never hurt her, but what if he was ordered to kill another witch? Someone close to Phoebe. How could he deny what he was and disobey the orders of the Source? But wasn't he doing that already?

Listening to the song, Phoebe wondered if someone had requested this one, knowing she would be there? It was hitting way too close to home.

How deep was her love? Deep enough to belong to Evil to protect those she did love. Deep enough to do whatever she could to save Cole... and if she couldn't save him, then her love was deep enough to stop him.

She was a witch, a Charmed One. Cole was her soulmate... but as she had told Piper, in this instance, love wasn't enough.

He wished he could explain to her just why he wanted to bring Angelus back. It wasn't just a promise. Raynor had given him over to Angelus. He hated the term, but Angelus was his master. It was his duty to restore him. But again, he was already disobeying his duties. What was one more?

She wished she could get him to see what would happen if he brought back Angelus. People would die.. She would die. Tears filled her eyes as she tightened her arms around him. That he loved her, she believed that. That he was willing to toss what they had away for Angelus? That was the part that killed her. He knew what Angelus would do to her, and still he was determined to bring him back. He knew what she would be forced to do and still...

He saw her tears and cupped one hand around her cheek, wiping away the tear with his thumb. The human in him wanted her, her happiness, her safety. The demon wanted Angelus back. Which side was stronger?

"Sorry," she said softly, laying her head back on his chest.

She needed him in her life, she missed him so much. She wanted things to be like they had been before. However, she knew they couldn't, not while he was on this insane quest. No matter how much this was killing her, she had to be strong. She had made the right decision... it didn't mean she was happy about it.

He kissed the top of her head. Tonight, the human was stronger. He was here with her in his arms. She was the only thing in the world right now.

Phoebe neld him and when the song ended, they walked off of the floor. But then, this one started playing.
