Criminal Justice, Friday, Period 1

"Today," Batman said, pausing for dramatic effect, "we're talking about dedicating yourself to vigilantism."

"The truth is, no matter how hard the police and lawyers work, crime in a major urban area is impossible to stop. By nature, they are mostly reactionary forces. They can't arrest and prosecute somebody before they commit a crime. If funding allows, they can put enough bodies on the streets to act as a deterrent, but that's not likely to happen to any large degree," Batman said. "At that point, truly dedicated individuals can make a difference."

"Criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot. I became the Batman to prey on their fears. Give them a bogeyman to be afraid of," Batman explained. "I seek out crimes before they happen. I'm ready for crimes as they happen. I strike hard enough and enough that criminals in Gotham City know that they're lucky if the police catch them. They know to fear me And that makes them think twice about committing a crime."

"There are two reasons I've allowed myself to be here instead of in Gotham City right now. First, I've left Gotham in the hands of individuals as dedicated and nearly as good as me. Second, however long I'm gone, the criminals don't know when I might return. If you can turn yourself into a living myth, the threat of you being there will be enough for a long time."

"But that's how I approach it in my city. I have a colleague who calls himself Superman," Batman explained. "He's an invulnerable alien with god-like strength who defends his city by focusing on inspiring hope in the common man. It works for him. He does his job well. But he can afford to take a rosier view because he can do just about anything. Why wouldn't he be more positive? If making the world a better place came naturally to you, you'd smile more, too."

"When you dedicate yourself, when you truly decide to fight crime with only the limits you place on yourself, it's on you to decide how you're going to do it. Hope for fear? Reactive or proactive? With a team or by yourself?" Batman asked. "You have to do it in a way you can live with. A way that will make you as effective as possible."

"You don't need all of the answers today. It took me more than a decade to finish my initial training and become the Batman," Batman said. "But I want to know right now, how would you go about being a vigilante?"
