Basic Questing! Wednesday, Period Four

When the students stepped inside the Danger Shop today, they'd find themselves in what appeared to be a small clearing in what otherwise appeared to be a dense old-growth forest. At Thor's feet were the backpacks the class had packed a month and a half ago. There were also a selection of swords, axes, spears, and maces spread out on the ground nearby.

"I hope you all enjoyed the break," he said, once everyone was assembled. "And that you've come back prepared to embark on a quest, as that is what you'll be doing today!" he beamed at them. "Find your pack, and then select your weapon. Your objective is to reach the end of the trail safely, at which point you will be rewarded."

Once everyone had collected their items of choice, he waved a hand, gesturing towards the trail leading out of the clearing. "Begin!"

Pick up your pack, and select your weapon. The weapons available come in a range of stylistic design, size, and weight.

Mercy grabbed her pack and considered the weapons. A sword would be great, but an axe seemed a more realistic choice. She picked on with a good weight and heft to it and got ready to head out.

Billy certainly wasn't going to miss the chance to carry a sword around, and he tried to pick one that was a little lighter, so he wouldn't get tired of carrying it.

After due consideration and testing the weight and feel of various options, Vider selected a spear over the short sword that had been her other finalist.

You may set out alone, or with a partner!

Hope you weren't thinking this would just be a simple walk in the proverbial (or simulated) park... because suddenly the path is blocked by a large patch of stinging nettle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urtica_dioica). Going around isn't an option, you must find some way to get through!

(if you're foolish enough to decide to walk through the patch, the effects of the stinging nettle will wear off by the end of class)

Mercy pulled on her gloves and used the axe to carefully clear enough of a path to be able to get through. And if it helped someone else out too, all the better.

Okay, so you made it past the nettle patch... but now there's a ravine with a rushing river at the bottom. It's not too steep a drop- maybe you could try jumping it. Or maybe you could use some overhanging branches and some rope to help you swing your way across...

Mercy pulled out her rope and fashioned a knot she could pull free when she got to the bottom and used the rope to help herself 'walk' down the drop.

Once safely there she tugged the rope free and coiled it back up.

There's not much time to rest on the other side of the river, as you're suddenly surrounded by three snarling, snapping, unpleasant looking creatures. They look almost like wolves, but for the large horns on the tops of their heads. What will you do?

Lovely. Just lovely. Mercy howled at them and raced forward swinging her axe and doing her best to look as dangerous as possible, hoping they'd scatter as normal wolves would. If they didn't, maybe she'd shift and flee out of there.

And after all that, you arrive at a clearing not unlike the one where you began, where Thor was there to offer you a cold drink and a bucket full of Halloween candy. Well done!

Who was willing to offer advice should you require it.

But if you need physical help, you'd have to hope Vider was willing to step in.

Vider could probably be persuaded to help her fellow students, assuming they asked nicely.
