Teamwork, Monday, Period 3

Class met on the school grounds today, where Jack had sectioned off four plots of grass shaped like small landing strips and scattered with frisbee-size silver hoops.

"So today," she said, "We're going to work on trust by playing minesweeper. Way it works is, you guys pair off. Then one on each team, the minewalker, goes into a field while the other, the guardian, stands outside the rope and shouts instructions on how to get across without stepping on those silver frisbee things. Those are mines. Once the first person is across, they leave the area and take the place of the guardian.

She smirked. "Simple, right? Except there are two catches. First, the minewalker is blindfolded. Second, the mindwalker can't talk. So before anybody goes onto the field, you should take a minute and figure out your strategy for communicating. Winner is the first team to get both people across without setting off the mines."

Pair off, pick a field, then decide who gets blindfolded first.

Gert crossed her arms over her chest and glanced around for a partner. She wasn't sure if closing her eyes and being around lots of other blindfolded people was a good idea or a terrible one right now.

Cade gave her a way-warm-for-Cade smile. "Would you rather be blind or not?"

"Blind, I think," Gert said, but that smile made her a little wary. "Why do you look like you're gonna steer me into something?"

"Would I do that?"

Then he remembered that yeah, he'd totally do that.

"I'm not going to do that."

"I feel so reassured," Gert said dryly, but she believed him. Mostly. Possibly in part because he smelled kind of good today, but that was a weird, inappropriate thought.

"Okay, so what, I'll just walk really slowly and you can yell instructions?" she said, adding in a grumble, "Most of these stupid trust games at least let the blindfolded person walk with the person who can see."

Not that she wanted to walk near Cade or anything. Noooo.

"Well, then we'd both blow up," Cade said, "or something. I've done this with real bombs. This'll be easy, then we can celebrate."

He felt like blowing off steam today.

"I won't let you fake blow up," he said with another smile. "Trust me."

Gert paused. "Alright."

Whatever celebrating in this instance would entail, she was pretty sure she was up for it.

She picked one of the strips of cloth from a table, then turned away from him. "Okay, blindfold me," she said, holding it out. "...Insert joke here about how many times you've done this before."

Cade laughed. "And how little I was wearing at the time?"

Stop, Cade.

He put the blindfold on and looked at the field. "Okay, take one step forward. I want to see how big a step you take."

And also check out her ass.

Well, he wasn't wrong to check it out. She had a pretty nice ass, as she demonstrated as she took a step forward.

"That good?" she asked with an awkward swing of her arms. This was going to be a weird class period. "Just point me in the direction to start in. Gosh, I sure hope I don't fake-die."

"Well, I'd point but you can't see it," Cade said because he thought he was hilarious. "Two more steps in front of you, then two to the right."

"Thanks."

And after taking a moment to get her bearings, Gert set off in that direction. Slowly. This would be a lot easier if she wasn't feeling so awkwardly physical today.

Also, if she were allowed to talk while she did this. Because snark made everything easier. Trufax.

"You're doing good," Cade said. "One step forward, then three to the left."

Gert continued moving as instructed, and okay, the pollen in the air could seriously go screw itself, because making her sort of enjoy being told what to do was just weird. Not to mention mean.

She stepped over a twig (okay, she was totally cheating by peeking under the blindfold, so sue her) and waited for Cade's next instruction, now only a few steps left to go until the finish line.

"Now spin in a circle and hop on one foot."

Beat.

"It's for science."

"Ha ha."

Like Cade knew anything about science.

She took another step forward, narrowly avoiding one of the 'mines,' then called, "That it? Are we done?"

Because celebrations would be good. You know. Maybe.

"You remain un blownup," Cade confirmed. "Yay me."

"Yeah, you're a real superhero," she agreed dryly. Removing and blindfold, she toed the ground with her shoe for a minute before adding, "So... after class, if you want to, uh, get your ego fed more..."

That came out weird. Gert made a face. That was what she got for never paying attention to pick-up lines.

"I have work, but I've been late before," Cade said with a grin.

Like...most of the time he was late.

"I know a place."

Once we ping in!

Cade was there, giving Jack what he believed were covert glances.

They weren't all that covert. Stupid week.

"Got a problem?," Jack asked in a low voice, putting on some extra bravado to help herself remember that -- even if Cade didn't seem much like a kid, and especially not today -- encouraging his flirty looks was starting down the road toward a whole mess of trouble.

"Nothing that a few drinks can't fix," Cade said. "Would you like one too?"

Cade: making amazing decisions since forever.

"You have no idea," Jack sighed, twisting her ponytail as a way of keeping her hands busy. "That and a long run, maybe."

Jack's decision-making skills were not, strictly speaking, "good" either.

Cade. Stop.

"Maybe you will," Jack said, with a light shrug. "It's a small island."

And a loooong week.

"Maybe I'll even look for you."

"Maybe I won't run the other way if I see you doing that."

A VERY long week.

Jack paced in tight circles while the students went through the course. She needed to pump up her workout, she decided; clearly there was some extra physical energy that wasn't helping her at all.
