There were a whole lot of pom-poms in the gym today and with good reason! Some gremlins had gotten into the cheerleader equipment locker and started using the poms as wigs. They had been shooed out and the poms had been washed before the start of the cheer meeting, although they might still be slightly wet.

"Hi, everyone," Jessica said. She was already in her cheer uniform because why not, it was meeting time. "Welcome to cheerleading. Hopefully you've already signed up or you're going to sign up. Because if you're just here to watch, one, that's creepy, and two, it's the first meeting. Come on."

"Perhaps they do not realize how poor their decisions must be to lead them to this," Loki added philosophically. As one does. "Never mind that. We wish you luck in your auditions and to let you know that, truthfully, there is little you can do wrong to be rejected from the squad."

It was true.

"And we are always in need of plucky up and comers should we finally make it to regionals!"

"Maybe one day we'll even know what regionals are," Jessica said, rolling her eyes.

"I gather they are a mystical thing that must never be attained." Thanks, Loki. Thanks.

Stretch out and all that. Maybe practice with people. If you're into that.

It had been awhile since Kathy had done a proper workout, so she was stretching and limbering up beforehand.

Give us an A! Give us a U! Give us… look, we just want to know you can spell, okay?

Maddie did this last year. She still wasn't really great with the idea of auditioning. But she did know that Jessica and Loki didn't really care that much.

"Gimme an F! Gimme and H! What's what spell?"

And done.

"Fhuh," Jessica answered. "Good job, Maddie."

Raven . . . was the very picture of a 1950s cheerleader. She knew it wasn't the fashion any more, of course, but she also knew Jessica knew when she came from, and besides, the bullhorn was cutely kitchy. (And real. She wanted to be able to put it down sometimes, after all.)

Her audition routine was similarly outdated. Mostly, that meant handjives and the occasional back handspring -- which she landed perfectly. Advantage of having molecular control over your muscles.

"We may need to nudge you toward some more modern routines," Jessica said while mentally adding 'uniforms,' "but that was great, Raven. I had no idea you could do handsprings like that."

Raven nodded. "I thought so, but I wanted to go with what I knew."

Cecil ran in just a little late, but in his defense - Disneyland!

He had his own pompoms, even if they were a little...squirmy; did that help?

"Kill 'em! Smash 'em! Stick 'em in a vise! Save their blood for a sacrifice!"

That was good, right? He'd always loved that one his first time through high school.

Kathy grabbed the pompoms a little dubiously. "Hi," she said. "I've never cheered before. I'm like that girl in that cheerleader movie? I'm a gymnast and this seemed the closest to a club for that I could find."

Who thought it was a good idea to let them do this again?
