Hopefully everyone in the club would appreciate the act of will it had taken for Zhari to come back from Disney on time, rather than taking the late portal back. Now Sholeh was sad and Zee wasn't speaking to her, but Zhari was ignoring them and even trying to grin as she stood up in front of everyone.

"Hi, I'm Zhari and welcome to the Iron Chef Club. I heard about the show and thought it sounded pretty fun, and I really like cooking and eating, so, uhh, here we are."

Zhari wasn't much for public speaking.

"Every week, our advisor, Dr. Hannibal Lecter, will tell us what the secret ingredient of the day is, and then we have to figure out what to make with it. Then we can team up--or not, I guess, whichever works for you--and make a dish that features the secret ingredient. Every week, we'll be choosing a different type of dish, like dessert, or breakfast, or soup, and your dish has to fit in with that, too. And at the end of the club, we'll share our dishes and maybe pick a winner. Or just sample neat stuff, you know?"

Look, there was food and they'd get to cook it and eat it. Zhari wasn't sure what else was necessary, here.

"Anyone have questions?" Sholeh prodded her. "Oh, right! Today's special ingredient is artichoke. And, for our first meeting, no dish theme, so make whatever artichoke dish you want."

Rilla supposed that with Dr. Lecter here, the rules of "eeeeeeeeeeeeew" applied here too, so she asked, "This is really food?" instead of the "WHY WOULD YOU EAT THIS" she wanted to.

"It's a vegetable," Zhari said encouragingly.

Rilla gave her a "the heck you say" sort of look. "Really."

"You eat the heart, I think?" Zhari offered. "Under all the spines?"

Rilla's nose wrinkled. "A vegetable has a heart?"

"Why not?" Zhahri asked, ever practical. "Potatoes have eyes and corn has ears, don't they? Why can't an artichoke have a heart?"

=That sounds like the cover of a kid's book,= Zeela opined. =Dumb kids.=

"Well, they aren't real eyes," Rilla said. "They're just holes in the potatoes."

"I don't the think the artichoke has a real heart, either," Zhari said dryly. "No circulatory system. I bet it's just the center of the...plant."

Like Zhahar knew anything about artichokes and what they were called!

Well now Rilla felt a little ridiculous.

"It's still pretty pointy for something to eat," she fell back on.

Somewhere, Karla felt cheerfully vindicated and didn't know why.

"They probably get less spiny when they're cooked," Zhahar decided. "Like, umm, clams or something. You look at it and think 'I can't eat this' but then you open it up and there's the bit to eat. We could work together, if you want? Figure it out together?"

Once you (or your team) has chosen a recipe, bring it over to the cooking stations and cook it up. Plenty of ~~handwavy~~ ingredients to choose from!

Sparkle was going to just go with something fairly straightforward, since his cooking skills could still stand to improve somewhat. So he was going with a warm dip, which had the added bonus of letting him used canned artichoke instead of figuring out how to work his way around the fresh ones.

... They looked thorny. He was having none of that.

In real Iron Chef, there'd be points added or docked for presentation, but Dr. Lecter hadn't covered plating in his classes yet. So, instead, everyone help themselves and dig in!

Artichoke and shrimp dip with pita crackers. It wasn't the fanciest or even the most complicated of dishes, but Sparkle set it out for people to sample, confident that, if nothing else, it wouldn't kill them. That was always a bonus, right?

Zhari was torn between looking pleased with how it all turned out and looking anxious for the same.

Hannibal wasn't sure if he ~~was supposed to ping in~~ wanted to taste what the students were making.

...Do we use sign ins for clubs? I DON'T EVEN KNOW ANYMORE
