The students had ~~handwavily~~ gotten an email asking them to meet in a clearing in the woods. Sure, Jack could have programmed the Danger Shop to look like a forest, but she was a believer in going with the real thing. Even if the real thing was, frankly, grey and a little chilly.

As the students arrived, she handed each one a paintball gun and directed them toward a pile of armor. Once everyone was suited up, she began to speak. "Glad to see nobody got lost chasing a squirrel," she said. "Anyhow, so today you're going to work on battle tactics through paintball. Lucky you, the roster's balanced enough that we can do guys against girls. Girls are the red team, guys are the blue team. First team to mark everyone on the other side wins. If nobody does that, team with the most people standing at the end of the hour wins. You can play a little dirty, but I'm trusting all of you to be freaking adults with the paint guns. No shooting at super-close range, no shooting above the shoulders, no shooting an area not covered by armor. Break a rule on purpose and you get detention with me this weekend."

She quickly demonstrated how to aim and fire a gun at the trees and watched the students do the same, then: "First thing you guys need to do is pick captains. I'd say Surreal and Cade because they had so much fun last week bossing people around, but it's up to you. Captains get to help their teams come up with a strategy and then watch them play it through. Either captain notices your squad's getting too violent, come to me."

She glanced at her omni-tool. "You get 15 minutes to strategize and half an hour for the battle. Time starts now."

Theo didn't know if there was much to strategize but he was just going to take cover behind a large tree. That was a good strategy, wasn't it?

"Make sure they're not coming from that direction," Cade said, pointing to the way Theo would be completely exposed. "Can you climb a tree? They didn't say we couldn't have snipers."

"I...can probably climb a tree," he said, glancing up and taking stock of the branches. "The limbs look strong enough to hold my weight?"

"Sure," Cade said with a cursory glance up. "Or else you'll fall out and that can be kind of funny."

Theo fixed him with a look. "It won't be funny to me." And Dev would probably be pissed. "And you'd lose your higher ground."

"Try to land on one of the girls," Cade advised with a grin. "But that branch there looks pretty stable."

"It's a sound strategy," Ange said, rubbing her chin thoughtfully. "Not the falling on another person but taking the high ground and using that to our advantage."

"Boring," Dev boomed, growling. "I would much prefer to run straight at people and shoot them!"

"And most likely die instantly," Ange said. "Be smart, Theo. Climb the tree. Carefully."

"If I fall, can you at least call the nurse?" Theo said, turning around and reaching for a hand and foothold on the tree. "So I don't die."

"I can do that," Cade said, nodding. "I think some of them might even be hot, so bonus for us."

"Bonus for you if I'm knocked out," Theo pointed out, scaling the tree carefully. "What are you gonna be doing?"

"Shooting Surreal," Cade said with a fiendish grin.

"And I should just shoot everyone else?" Theo called down to him once he'd gotten himself perched on a limb solidly.

"Sounds like a plan," Cade said. "Aim center mass. No need to get fancy."

"I'll do my best," Theo told him, nodding and cocking his gun. "Good luck, man."

Cade grinned at him. "It'll be fun."
