Welcome to the Danger Shop as programmed by Batman, kids! Today the shop looked like a dark, imposing, but strikingly beautiful cityscape. It was nighttime in the programmed city, and Batman spent a fair amount of time making sure to program the wind to get just the right degree of foreboding. Did I mention that you were in an alley? Because you were.

If you had ever been to Gotham City, this would look very familiar.

"One of the most basic things a uniformed police officer will do is patrol a certain designated section of the city. They might do it in patrol cars or on foot, depending on their assignment, department cut-backs, or how much they've aggravated their higher ups recently," Batman explained. "This patrol is called 'the beat.' When an officer is on the beat, they will be watching out for any crimes or issues that need police attention. If they notice something, they'll call it in, then investigate. Being mobile also means that if somebody calls 911, police dispatch will call the beat cops to deploy them to a problem as first responders."

"Your role today is strictly observational," Batman said, starting to walk out of the alley and waving for the students to follow him. "We're going to go on a ride along in a police car in what I want to stress is a simulation. At no point will you be in any danger. The people you see will not be in danger, either, since they will not be real."

Batman led the students to a police car, opened the door to the back seat, and ordered, "Get in." Although it looked like a regular police car on the outside, there was limo seating once they were inside. Plenty of room for everyone.

While standing in a breezy alley that feels generally foreboding.

You're in the surprisingly roomy backseat of a cop car, checking out a fake Gotham City. This should be fun! You'll hear descriptions of various crimes going on around the city if you're listening to the police radio, but you'll get the most information about the crime you're about to go see.

Look around and chat, you know, generally.

So this was actually kind of cool. Maddie had always sort of thought that if she ended up in the back of a police car it'd be for non-ridealong reasons, so she was so happy to be here in this situation.

The police car was sent to the scene of a break in at a local jewelry store that had just received a special cat's eye diamond worth millions of dollars. Some regular criminals decided to get to it before any cat-themed thieves could, but they were subdued by a vigilante who left them tied up by the door.

If the students chose to get out of the car to investigate, they would see a smashed up storefront, some smashed glass display cases, and four thieves whose bruises were already starting to show, courtesy of Gotham's concerned citizens. You will be waiting here until the wagon comes along to pick the thieves up.

Even though it wasn't real, Alex was impressed with the vigilante's work here. She wasn't at all surprised she related to that aspect more than anything.

There was a museum heist a few miles away, but they got away before any vigilantes could stop them. A squad car was in hot pursuit, though, and our car joined the chase quickly.

The main thrill here is driving very, very fast behind a bunch of other cars also driving very, very fast. You don't have a great view of what's happening, but you can hear when the art thieves eventually crash.

If you investigate when the car stops, you'll see that the art thieves' van hit the van of ANOTHER group of art thieves who were leading police on a chase from another museum, because that's how much crime there was in Gotham.

"Oh, losers," Atton muttered. He didn't need to see anything to have his judgement ready. "Can't you drive?"

One final call for the class. One of the local vigilantes is fighting a costumed villain on a nearby rooftop. Units are ordered not to engage unless necessary. So when the car pulls up to the building in question, all there is to do is watch from the street.

After a few minutes, a lean, dark shape jumps off the building, carrying a larger figure. As the figure gets within a couple stories of the ground, it spreads its arms and starts to glide towards the police. It drops the criminal - a large, muscley, reptile-looking guy, and swoops past, his mullet billowing in the wind.

"This was a relatively quiet night in Gotham City. Most nights, the officers we were with would have had more direct involvement in crime situations. But as I said, this was an observation," Batman explained as the simulation ended. "I hope you learned something about both the drudgery and the routine of working the beat, because we'll be approaching it again from a slightly different angle in the weeks to come."

He's the TA.

Victor was disappointed they hadn't been allowed to intervene during the supervillain encounter, but otherwise he was thoroughly psyched by the experience. It was a beautiful night, and he'd enjoyed seeing the sights in Gotham.

He's the Batman.
