Care for Magical Creatures; Monday, Period Four [ 09/09 ].

In the Danger Shop, the students would find themselves walking into a beautiful meadow, strewn about with bright and colorful flowers, where a weeping willow hung over a crystalline pond, its fronds gently kissing the smooth and reflective surface. A thick and wild forest surrounded them, birds chirping and the leaves of the trees gently rustling in the warm, pleasant breeze. They would find their teacher(s) standing on a small hillock underneath a tree, accompanied by a majestically white unicorn, so white it was nearly silver, with a wild mane that drooped over her large and gentle eyes, the unicorn tossed her head and gave a powerful whinny, before pawing at the ground with her diamond-like hooves. The smooth ivory spiral of her horn caught in the bright afternoon sunlight. It seemed to hover just a little behind Minsc's shoulder, appreciating his company, but too wary of the big man to allow herself to come too close.

"Welcome back to class!" Minsc announced, holding out his hand. "Now, I know most of you expressed an interest to know even more about giant miniature space hamsters, which Boo was very pleased to find out, but we must save the best for later! For now, I thought to myself, 'what do most people think of when they think magic creatures? And, immediately, my brain goes dragons! They are fierce and powerful and good for butt-kicking! But they are a little advanced for us at this time. Dragons, too, must wait for another time! So then my brain tells me unicorns, and I thought, ahhh, yes, unicorns!

"Allow me to introduce you to Ctesia! While there are many different forms of unicorns, she is a Modern Classical Unicorn, the kind you are most likely to encounter in this day and age. Her older cousins from ancient times were said to be much smaller, much less like the horses of today, and sharing more in common with deers and goats! Over the years, the unicorn has become a symbol of purity and virginity, most likely because some say it can only be seen by those who are pure of heart! Of course, that's baldurdash, since all of us here can see Ctesia just fine, but there is reason behind such beliefs. It is veeeerrrry, very rare for a unicorn to associate with anyone who may be evil or dastardly, while they are incredibly fond of those who are good at heart! They are said to have incredible powers of protection and healing for those who have earned the respect of such creatures, those who do good and, by being protected, will make the world a better place!

"Here is what I would would like you to do today!" announced Minsc as a few more unicorns began to stride into the field and nose the flowers underfoot. "Scattered around this field are some flowers of ambrosia, a favorite treat of the unicorns, and you will all see buckets of rancid water at your feet. I would like you to try to earn a unicorn's trust by offering it ambrosia and, most importantly, thinking good and pure thoughts. Should you let evil start to creep into your hearts, then your chances of attracting a unicorn will be very low indeed. Once you have made friends with the unicorn, I would like you to request of it to turn the water pure. It is one of their more useful and interesting talents, and I would like all of you to have a pure bucket of water by the end of the class. I can help if you need it. Those of you who are virgins will likely have an easier time at this, and, if you can, I would like you to spend a little time grooming your unicorn as well. They like that, and you just may be surprised at how much better it will make you feel, too."

To finish his lecture, Minsc grinned and held out a hand to Ctesia, who tentatively arched her long, beautiful neck forward to sniff at it. Ultimately, though, she snorted, shaking her head and rearing back and taking a few regretful steps away from Minsc. He smiled ruefully at the class. "Any questions? If not, then let us get started, and see if you can have better luck!"

Even while standing in fake sunlight for the first time in one's life, it was awfully hard to ignore a unicorn.

Especially when it helpfully headbutted you until you sat down, then folded up its legs, leaned its head on your shoulder, and whuffled in your ear. Ambrosia? What ambrosia?

Well. This wasn't awkward at all.
