Live Entertainment Appreciation, Thursday, Period 5

This afternoon's class was, according to a note that Jono had left on the board in the classroom, to meet him on the Causeway, where he was waiting for them in his usual long coat and army boots attire. He waited a few minutes there for everyone to arrive, since it wasn't exactly a long hike from the school on an island Fandom's size, and then he launched into what was going to more or less pass for a lecture today.

It was going to be shorter than usual, since his throat was still feeling a little on the raw side. He was pretty certain his students would cope, somehow.

"Welcome to Live Entertainment Appreciation," he greeted, giving a look around at the students assembled. "I'm Jonothon Starsmore, just Jono or Jon will suffice, and I'll be your glorified babysitter for the semester. If you're here, I'm going to assume that you either have some interest in the entertainment industry, or you really wanted to avoid taking classes that involve actual academic material. There's not a hell of a lot of rhyme or reason to the little field trips we'll be taking every Thursday. I suppose pretty much the only common thread tying them together is that they involve going to experience something live, generally as members of an audience."

Exciting? Jono would probably look more thrilled if he hadn't found out about this class on the weekend, leaving him with a handful of days to prepare a syllabus around trying to help win a war in another reality from afar.

"A few basic rules before we step into our portal. First, we stay together, as a group. I'm not coming back to the island without any of you, especially since these trips are going to take us to some places that are rather far from here and there's a chance you'll have to do battle with Portalocity alone otherwise. Second, you're all representatives of Fandom High while we're out there. Behave as such. If I have to step in to tell you to stop acting like idiots, I will put serious thought into keeping future classes in the Danger Shop, and that will be a shame. It's lifelike as hell in there, but not even a sim can properly replicate the atmosphere of a live event. Plus, I'll probably spend the rest of the semester picking on you. I'm a vindictive bastard like that."

Well. He was.

"I'm going to take a quick headcount before we take off. As you get in line, introductions. Name, class, and one form of entertainment you've always wanted to take in live."

When introductions were through, he waved the students through the portal. On the other side, they'd step into a quiet hallway, from which Jono ushered them into a much noisier section of arena seating.

"Welcome," he said, taking a seat himself, even as he bunched his shoulders slightly, obscuring the bottom half of his face from view under his upturned coat collar, "to the roller derby. If you've never heard of it, sit back and watch. It's fairly self-explanatory. And if anyone wants popcorn or drinks, they're on me when the vendor comes around."

Yes, students. This was Jonothon's idea of a brief class introduction lecture. Enjoy the Roller Derby, all.

"Name, class, and one form of entertainment you'd like to experience live," Jono said. "Starting with… you."

Introduce yourself, and then everyone can hop through the portal to today's entertainment of choice.

"Cecil Baldwin." He waved. "I'm a freshman, I guess. And...um." He thought about it for a moment. "I'd really love to sit in on some of the old-time radio shows. And I love watching people do Science!"

"Good to have you in the class Cecil," Jono replied, giving him a small nod of his head. "I might have to look into what it would take to get us all into an older radio station for an hour, sometime. And do you like any particular sort of science, by any chance?"

He happened to know more than a handful of scientists back in his own reality, not that he was in any hurry to drag his students to a school with a higher mortality rate than the Night Vale library just to watch Hank work.

"Um." Cecil might have blushed a little. "I'm not sure; any kind of science?" He'd done being fourteen before; he knew "whatever kind my boyfriend does" probably wasn't the best answer.

"Could you really get us into an old station? That would be neat!"

Heh. Cute kid. Jono gave his shoulders a shrug.

"If I can't get us into a real one, I'll try to program something into the Danger Shop," he replied, since that seemed like the easiest way to go about it. "How old were you hoping for? Thirties? Forties?"

"Hey," Bay said. "Bay Kennish, I'm a senior, and I've always wanted to see a really great performance artist at work. Like, I've seen the Marina Abramović movie but it's not the same as being there."

Jonothon gave a nod, wondering momentarily if Abramović had anything coming up in the near future.

If not, there were always realities set in different timelines, he supposed.

"That's not outside the realm of possibility," he noted. "I'll see if I can find something for you before the semester is through, Bay."

"Mavis Dracula!"

Said the bat in the floating pink pet carrier (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51QaXxI-hPL.jpg). Hi. Look, it was a vast improvement over the Igloo cooler, at least, and enough lighter that she could easily float it instead of needing someone else to carry her.

"I'm a junior, and honestly, I'm happy to see anything. Live is... not a word I'd use for most of the entertainers we book at my family's hotel."

"Mavis, hm?" Jono leaned over and squinted a little in order to get a better look inside the carrier. A convenient sort of sunblock, he supposed. Clever, too. "I'm pretty certain I've met your father about. Are... outdoor daytime performances going to be terribly inconvenient for you, luv? I can aim for things that'll at the very least have enough shade to not be too uncomfortable."

He was still a bit on the fence about vampires - he'd been bitten and temporarily under the thrall of his own world's Dracula once, after all - but first and foremost, Mavis was one of his students, and he'd do whatever he could to see to it that she was safe and comfortable during class outings.

Mavis pressed her bat-face to the shadowed mesh and grinned. "As long as there's shade, I'll be okay, or I can stay in here and somebody can prop me on a rail Though you um... might not want to mention it to my dad? He'll only freak out."

"I won't mention it if you don't," Jono chuckled, shaking his head a little. "I wouldn't deny anyone the chance to see even half of the things that we'll be out there taking in, trust me. Do you like music or sports at all?"

She was going to give him a broad range of things she wanted to see, he was going to try to narrow it down some.

"Aino Minako - just Minako for short - JUNIOR! And an idol concert!" Minako enthused, tossing up a V-for-Victory salute.

Jono raised an eyebrow at Minako's enthusiam, though he really wasn't terribly surprised, either. He'd met her before, after all.

"Do you have any favourite idols in particular, Minako?"

He happened to know a few personally, though it wasn't terribly likely he'd ever subject his students to the vocal stylings of Sugar Kane. Maybe Hannah Montana or Dazzler, though...

He reserved the right to wear earplugs on those outings.

"Hi, I'm Karina Lyle," she said, with a little wave and smile once it was her turn. "I'm a junior and it's totally copying Minako, but idol concert, definitely."

"Any idol in particular that you'd like to see?" Jono didn't mind the copycat answer, really. It was interesting to see where his students' interests sat. "I can't make any promises, but it would give me a starting point. I know a few musical superstars personally, but that doesn't necessarily mean my students want to sit through their shows."

"Pop-y and high energy?" Karina suggested, figuring that was better than naming names since it gave him more options! She was helpful! Totally! "And I'm willing to sit through just about anything."

If she didn't like them, she'd take notes on why and make sure to avoid that in her own shows the best she could. It was win-win either way.

Zhari was looking down at her clothing and wondering if her frock would make her stand out too much. Maybe she should start wearing the few modern outfits Sholeh had stuffed in their closet.

"I'm Zhari," she said when it was her turn, grateful that this was one teacher who wouldn't look too hard at the roster. Zee's looming appointment with Mr. Hansen had them all a little on edge. "I'm a Junior and I'd like to see..."

She was drawing a blank. Zhahar was more of a homebody than her sisters.

Jono could only imagine what was flying back and forth in there during Zhahar's pause.

"Well, Zhari, I'll see what we can do. I was thinking about perhaps taking you lot on an outing to Broadway sometime..." Because, why the hell not? It was the school's money, not his. "Any author in particular you'd like to hear reading?"

The look Zhahar was slashing Jono's way suggested she did not appreciate his request for additional information. And the slight wince that followed it spoke of the flood of names that Sholeh was excitedly rattling off.

"Nope," she said, just to cut off the flow of names. "I just thought it might be a good idea. Or, like, a poetry slam or something."

*Stop pouting, Sholeh. I didn't even offer up any of Zeela's ideas.*

Snow wasn't sure what to make of this class yet.

"I'm Snow White," she said. "A junior." She had to fumble for an answer to the last question. "I always enjoyed it when the minstrels performed at court."

"Snow White," Jono repeated, just to be sure. Because of course one of Jonothon's students was Snow White. He'd gone to school with Arthur and Merlin and he'd been antagonized by Sherlock Holmes. He was fairly certain that one of his good friends from high school was the Wicked Witch of the West. He'd gotten a job, once, from Wonderland's Alice. And now, Snow White.

This island. Honestly, now. One of these days Jono's brain was going to just liquefy and attempt to escape through his ears.

"So you're a fan of music, then, Snow?"


[OOC: Sorry if Jono actually shouldn't know her- I wasn't sure if she fell under the hood of 'classic literature that isn't meta'd' or not. I can change it if need be!]

Snow nodded. "I did love to listen to them when I was a child," she said. The years in the tower had been short on entertainment, though.

"I've heard some of the music from this world on the television. It's very...different."

"Toby Logan, junior, and... I think it'd be pretty cool to go to an NHL game." Professional sports totally counted as live entertainment, okay?

"Hockey fan, hm?" Jono pursed his lips a little at that. There were other sports he much preferred. He was a huge fan of proper football, after all. But for the first student in the class to request a sport, he'd have to take that into consideration. "You've got a favourite team, then?"

Because he wouldn't know one NHL team from another if they all lined up to slapshot his face.
