Literature 101- Thursday- 4th period

The students would be reporting to a regular classroom today, which was probably a good thing because no one wanted to see Jess try and work the Danger Shop.

If you wanted proof of this, the proof was that she was totally in front of the class dressed like Mark Twain. She'd worked really hard on her costume, too, even if she probably looked a little more like COlonel Sanders. She even spoke in an old-timey man's voice when she began, "Hello, students! And welcome to Literature 101. I'm Samuel Clements, AKA Mark Twain, and I'm here to introduce you to a wonderful journey of books and classic stories!"

Jess paused for dramatic effect, and it didn't actually matter if she was bombing with the students or not. She did, however, pull off her white wig and give the students a big smile. "Just kidding!" she said, like anyone had to be told that. "I'm Miss Day, and welcome to class. While we're here for the next semester, we're going to go over a few classic books a couple weeks at a time. If you've already read something, that's totally fine. It just means you can help us out more in discussions!"

Yes, Jess was that teacher.

She picked up a stack of books on her desk and started passing them out to each student. "Our first book is going to be Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain. You might remember him from earlier." Oh god, Jess. "Now, you only have a couple classes a week here, so there's no excuse not to have this book read by this time next week, and then we're going to have a discussion. Oh, and I should probably warn you, the language in this book is a little rough at parts, because it deals with slavery and some people have issues. So if you think you might have a hard time with it, I have another version of it that you can read. Now. Since this is our first class, I want you to go around and give me your name and tell me what kind of things you like to read."

"Um, I'm Stiles, despite what the name on the roster says," he said. "And I like to read historical stuff, and stuff on the supernatural."

Which also counted as historical stuff.

Yeah, that really wasn't helping Stiles in the "English teacher was probably evil" department. "You okay?"

Please don't be evil and sleep with the guy he had a crush on and then kidnap his dad. Please.

No, no books. He had never had someone tell him he looked like someone they knew. This was exciting!

"Wait, was he an asshole?" Stiles asked. "Wait, sorry, I mean was he a...I forgot any insults that don't have curse words in them."

"Oh okay. Thank god, I'd hate to have the same face as someone who was lame." No, Stiles, you had the same face as someone with erectile dysfunction.

"My name is Sholeh Zeela a Zhahar and I'm a Junior," she replied when it was her turn. "I like all sorts of things, really. Fantasy, mystery, history, mythology..." She trailed off, able to go on for awhile but realizing it was probably best to leave her introduction brief. "I love books so much, I got a job at the library."

There was a lot of enthusiastic nodding. "And I'm not from this world at all, so I'm really excited to be in a class where we can read and talk about great books from history!"

Sorry, Jess. She was probably going to speak in exclamation marks the entire semester.

"I'm Raven Darkholme," Raven said. "And I'm still catching up on the last 60 years of literature, but I really enjoy Agatha Christie. And Mr. Twain, of course."

She really did like Mark Twain. She was also kissing up, just a little. What? She liked Ms. Day's creative flair.

Sigh. Another introduction. "I'm Rilla Blythe," she said carefully, trying not to lisp. "I'm a thenior--" darn it, "--and I like to read novelth and poetry."

"My brother," Rilla said promptly. "He wrote a poem that's famous all over Canada."

So ... this teacher liked to dress up. Okay, it was still better than whatever Bay would have been doing at Buckner.

"I'm Bay," she introduced herself. "And I like to read travel stories. Things that take me to a place I've never been."

"'The Motorcycle Diaries' by Che Guevara," Bay answered. "And this book about the tropics called 'Getting Stoned with Savages.' I liked 'Eat, Pray, Love,' but the movie was way sappy for me."

"Hey, I'm Alex and, um." She had to think about this. It'd been awhile since she read much for fun. "I guess I like historical fiction...and non-fiction, too."

History seemed like a safe option.

"I am Paddra Nsu-Yeul," Yeul said, smiling. "Yeul is my first name."

Though she'd answer to anything because Yeul just... didn't really care.

"I do not read that much," she admitted, "but when I do, I enjoy history and fantasy, I suppose."
