Bluffing: Can't Read My... [Period 5, Wed]

Bond had his class meet him in the Danger Shop, which didn't look anything like a class room, what it did look like was a high end casino with a high end poker table and Bond in the dealers position. A stack of blank, white poker chips sat in front of each place at the table. Once everyone had arrived and taken a seat, he opened a deck of card and started shuffling.

"Good afternoon," he began. "I'm Professor Bond, and this is Bluffing. The point of this class is to learn two things, one is how to effectively bluff, the other is to tell when another person is trying to bluff you. Over the years, I've discovered that some of the best ways to pick up these two skills are through various kinds of games where there are stakes riding on one person being better at either of them than the other."

Bond gestured to the stacks of chips in front of them. "Those your stakes, we'll personalise them in a moment. Your goal at the end of the semester is to have as many of your classmates chips as you can win from them while retaining as many of your own as possible."

"Since it's the first week, we'll do introductions, then play a simple game to get into the swing of things. During introductions I'll be dealing each of you and and also myself a single card, which you'll then place bets against who has the higher value card. Aces low and kings high, in the case of cards being the same value, suits, clubs high, spades low."

"You play in pairs, minimum initial bet one chip, minimum raise one chip. You win if your opponent folds, or if they call and you have the higher card. Thanks to the wonder of the danger shop, the rest of the table won't see the actual value of your cards. You may also choose to play against me." He held up a black and silver chip with a symbol like a small martini glass on it. "As the house, my chips are worth double, but you know what they say about the house and winning."

"But first introductions, I'd like your name, your class, why you're taking this one, and a colour and symbol to personalise your chips, you first." Bond dealt a card face down to a random student. "I'm also looking for a TA, if anyone is interested."

Toby glanced at his card, eyebrows raising as he saw which it was. Putting it back to face-down position on the table, he introduced himself:

"Toby Logan, junior, I'm here because..." claiming his skills lied in 'face reading' seemed slightly more credible if he had some actual knowledge of the subject area, "people lie all the time, and I want to get better at figuring out when they're doing so." That was... kind of close to the truth.

"As for a symbol, what about a blue maple leaf?" Leafs fan for life.

Cade glanced at his card, but his expression didn't change much. This wasn't his first game of cards and where he came from, the cards changed value on their own so there was no point getting excited or despondent based on the first showing.

"I'm Cade, I'm a senior--maybe," he said with a little smirk, "--since this is bluffing, so I could be making that up, and I hoped that this class would be about gambling because I like taking people's credits. I want my chips to be black. No symbol."

Because kark symbolism.

"I'm Atton Rand," Atton said, lifting the card for two seconds before dropping it back down, expression unchanged besides the (disappointed?) pursing of his mouth. "I'm a senior. Figured it couldn't hurt to learn how to bluff."

Because he was obviously terrible at that.

"I like red. And a drink. Put a drink on it."
