Care for Magical Creatures; Monday, Period Four [ 09/02 ].

It was kind of funny, having a Danger Shop to look a little like a classroom, but Minsc did need it for the magical creatures later on. But he took an almost weird amusement for having everything start like a normal class when he knew it wouldn't be like that for very long. He let the students file in and take a seat, leaning on the desk in front of the room with his big arms crossed over his chest and an amused look on his face. His hamster obediently settled on his shoulder, gnawing on a baby carrot.

"Do we have everyone?" he asked, once everyone seemed settled. "Good! Welcome to Care for Magical Creatures! I am Minsc, and this is my giant miniature space hamster Boo! This semester, we will lead you through the caring of many magical creatures, from the little to the big, the pretty to the smelly, the adorable and the ugly! Today, of course, is our very first day, and so we will mostly be getting to know one enough because in this class, we will be a team and a team that works together, stays together.

"So let us keep this simple today! I would like to know who you are. What is your name? Where are you from? Why are you taking this class and what magical creature are you looking forward to learning about most? I shall start!

"My name is Minsc, and I am from a place called Rashemen! It is very far away from here. I am taking this class because I have to or else there would be no one else to teach it, and I am most looking forward to the class about giant miniature space hamsters, because then you will all get to know Boo!

"Alright!" Minsc beamed at the students. "Who is next? And, when we are finished, we will have a little treat, because this won't take all day, unless any of you feel particularly chatty..."

You heard the big man with the hamster. Please share your name, where you're from, why you're here, and what creature you'd like to see in this class most! Pretty straightforward, right?

"My name is Liara T'Soni," Liara said, bright-eyed. "I come from the planet of Thessia. I was curious as to Earth's cultural peculiarities, and magical creatures seemed like a relevant field of study. However, I am not yet fully done reading about your myths, so it would be presumptuous of me to choose a creature. I will rely on your expertise."

Yeah. Karolina was definitely back in Fandom wasn't she?

"I'm Karolina Dean," she introduced herself, with a smile. "And I'm from... Well, Los Angeles." Maybe that still held true, as much as she felt like she should also have worked Majesdane in there somewhere. "And, I don't know. I find myself pretty curious about giant miniature space hamsters, right now?"

"My name is Cassidy and I'm from Kaeleer." She said with a cheerful smile. "There are all kinds of legends in the world about magical creatures and some living in my world so I would like to know how to care for them if I ever come across them."

"Korra, I'm from the Southern Water Tribe, and I figured it might come in handy ~~next canon catch-up~~ someday."

"Hi, um. I'm Evan, and... I'm not from anywhere in particular."

Or, at least, nowhere that he wanted to talk about, and he didn't have the heart to keep saying he was from Kansas.

"I'm taking this class because you never know what kind of creatures you'll run into, especially around here, and I guess I'd like to learn about dragons. The headmistress of my old school had a little purple alien dragon, and he substituted for a couple of classes before I came here."

There had been a few death threats. Lockheed had a... very particular sort of way with children.

"I'm Vider Bearskin, I'm not really from anywhere, I've been traveling a lot in a caravan, and...I'd actually also like to learn more about giant miniature space hamsters." She'd never heard of such a thing!

"I'm Mavis." She gave a little wave. "I'm from Transylvania, and my family runs a hotel for magical creatures. The sentient kind...mostly... but we're pet-friendly too." Was that a brochure in her hand, with a stack on her desk to hand out of anyone was interested? Why yes, yes it was. She was her father's daughter, after all.

Mavis tucked her hair behind one ear as she added, "There's a big world out there, though. Or I guess a big lot of worlds! So I'd love to find out about creatures I haven't met at all yet."

So yes. Giant space hamster? A-OK with this young lady.

"And now," Minsc stood, clapping his hand together after the last student and then gesturing them open to them, "we are all friends! Let us get to business. Everyone, up, and follow me!"

Here, he lead the students out through one of the classroom doors, which lead not out into the bright and sunny meadow that could be seen from the classroom windows, but rather into a deep, dark cavern reeking of sulphur and brimstone. Great spires of dark, twisting rocks twisted from both the ceiling and the floor, while rivers of molten lava seemed to lazy bubble by. Somewhere in the distance, one could hear a tortured scream echoing through the caverns.

"Welcome," said Minsc, "to hell. Or Tartaros. Or the Underworld. It goes by many names, but, in many places, it serves as a gateway for the living to pass into the world of the dead. And many gateways usually have guards. In many of these underworlds, that guard is a Cerberus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerberus). Now, these many-headed canine creatures can guard many things, and the number of their heads can vary, but they are most typically seen with three. They are tough charges, let me tell you, dedicated to their jobs of keeping things out of where they should not be. But just like dogs that may only have one head, all they need to be loyal to their owner is a good amount of food and play and love.

"Today, I would like you to all spend a little time caring for a Cerberus of your own. Now, just be careful and don't let those fearsome jaws bite you! Are you ready? Here we go!"

He gave a whistle, and, from the dark shadows of the underworld, came bounding...about a dozen tiny little three-headed Cerberus puppies. Instead of fearsome growls, there were excited yaps, and they pranced around playing with each other and looking at the students with six pairs of hopeful eyes and wagging tails. Minsc started to bring out baskets of little dog toys and snackies for the students to use, too.

"Have fun!"

Oh they were so precious and adorable and Cassidy might well have fallen in love with the little puppies immediately. She was already on the floor and was playing with one that was making its home in her lap.

Oh, wow, Evan had needed this. He smiled and made himself comfortable on the floor, and very quickly was embroiled in a four-way tug-of-war match with one of the pups.

He was pretty sure he couldn't smuggle these guys into his room. Partly because he was pretty sure they were danger shop simulations, and partly because between himself and the dog he already had, there wasn't exactly enough room.

Oh, but he was tempted.

Teenage girl. Puppy.

Teenage girl. Effective equivalent of three puppies.

PUPPY PUPPY PUPPY.

"Who's the fluffiest puppy ever? You? No, you. No, wait, you!"

Even though Minsc himself is having quite fun playing with a puppy, he's certainly available should anyone need him.

It was hard not to notice that particular voice, even from her office, so by the end of class there was Ghanima, waiting just inside the door.

"Do my eyes deceive me?" she teased, "Or is that a miniature space hamster? I do believe I have only ever seen one other example of the species before."

Now I want a puppy.

Cassidy now wants a Cerberus puppy!
