Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Seriously Fandom, wtf flower crowns?

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies!]

"Oh."

Yeah, maybe she should've led with that.

"Xavin and I almost got married. She's a prince, technically, and it was my parents who made the Skrulls so angry at Majesdane, and they'd kind of promised my hand to Xavin. We thought going through with it might stop the war."

"That would have been...crappy," Jim said, making a face. "I mean, I get the reason why but you'd be unhappy."

"It wouldn't have been so bad," Karolina said ~~because they were canon soulmates or something~~. "She's a wonderful person. A good person. But adults are... Well, it wasn't going to work."

"So, why are you back if everything still isn't good?" he asked.

"Because we barely escaped intact." There'd been antimatter missiles involved. "We don't even know if anyone else from our system survived."

So, she was here because things weren't so much 'still not good' as they were just completely beyond repair.

"Karolina, goddamn," Jim said, staring at her. "Are you being hunted or anything?"

Karolina shook her head.

"I... don't think so?"

Because she didn't know about volume three, yet.

"I'm sorry everything sucked," he said and nodded. "And I'm glad to see you."

"I'm glad to see you too."

And he didn't even know all the sucky parts yet.

So she was going to try hugging him again now.

They could definitely hug it out, now. Jim even participated this time, embracing her tightly.

"Hey, you know, you were gone and missed me sort of dating someone," he teased. "You'll probably never see that again."

Karolina laughed against his shoulder, surprised. "What?"

Kar, you almost got married. These things happen.

"Who did you date?"

"A girl."

Please, you expected him to give it up that easy?

"A pretty girl. Good in bed."

Welcome back, Karolina.

Yeah, Karolina was going to blush a bit now. Still laughed, though. He hadn't changed a bit and that was comforting.

"Was that all there was to her?"

Actually, that was probably plenty. If you weren't as utterly romantic as Karolina.

"No, there were other things but why should I share that with you?" he asked, chuckling. "It'd ruin my mystique as not being one to date."

"You don't need that mystique with me, I'm not going to date you so you don't need to be mysterious!"

She thought she had a solid point there! Although mostly she was just arguing because this was probably the lightest conversation she'd had for weeks, if not months.

"She was an egotistical jerk," Jim told her with some fondness in his voice. "So, a female me."

"Awwww." That totally merited an 'awwww'. She'd heard the tone of his voice. "I'm happy for you."

"Why? It's over now. She's gone," Jim said, shaking his head. "Probably won't happen again."

"That doesn't matter," she told him, shaking her head. "You had her for a while and you don't sound heartbroken. That's good enough for me."

"Yeah, yeah," he said, shrugging. "It wasn't a bad summer. Could have been better but I won't complain."

"It was better than mine." Hers involved a lot more death and a lot less kind-of dating. "I'm sure it was good enough."

"Sorry," he said and felt kind of like an ass for telling her that.

"It's okay." She looked a bit wry as she said that. But still. It was okay. "The fall will be better."

It had to be.

"It will be," he said and pressed a kiss against her forehead. "And I swear, if you leave again and don't tell me you're leaving for a long time, I will come find you."

"I'm not going to leave like that again," Karolina murmured. For one, Majesdane was probably ashes at this point, so where would she even go.

But it was nice and reassuring to hear, all the same. "Thank you."
