Monsters and Humans. Lecture: WakWak. Friday, Period 4

"I had planned," Drac started class today with a sigh full of broken OCD woes, "to spend his class talking about my friend Frank and other man-made monsters. And perhaps the remaining time making sure that all of you properly understood zombies. The events of last Saturday, however, have changed my mind. Instead I have done some research and would like to share it with you, regarding the creatures that many of us encountered that day."

"... " He looked around the room, his eyes sad as they landed on Mavis: "they were vampires."

His head drooped in shame a moment, then he straightened up again. "According to my research they are technically the familiars of vampires. Familiars being a representative of another being or a personification of their power."

"They are a type of were-folk called the wakwak. They appear as normal people with normal jobs, usually involving livestock and especially butchering. At least until they are required to do the bidding of their vampire master, known as an Asuwang."

Drac made a small confused face. "Or as near as I can tell, that is. The stories about the wakwak are just as mixed and confused as every other human story about monsters. In some, the wakwak live in trees and in some they live in the throat of another monster. In other stories they are simply people who can change their appearance. In a few stories, the wakwak is the actual vampire and not just a familiar."

"The wakwak apparently snatch people and livestock, if not at their master's bidding, then simply to eat the hearts..."

Drac lifted his hands in the air, almost frustrated. "I don't want to upset you. But these monsters... I have never met one before in all my years. They attack monsters as well as humans. That makes them very dangerous. I don't know why they continue to attack, it is monsters like this that keep the rest of us in the shadows. It also means that you need to be able to protect yourself against them."

He reached for his notes. "Knowing as we already do how wrong so many of the human stories are, I found some ways in them to disable a wakwak. I don't know if these will actually work, so only try them if you have a secondary way out. Do you understand?" That glare was leveled at ALL of the children equally.

Drac handed a stack of papers to his TAs and asked them to be passed out to the class. Each paper was a handwritten flyer, on Hotel Transylvania letterhead, listing, in very fluid script and real ink, the important points about a wakwak and each of the non-lethal ways to disable them that Drac had been able to find.

"First. Ginger. Preferably stored in a small red pouch. Apparently ginger is caustic to the wakwak. As is salt. It prevents them from flying for days and makes them sick. Garlic is of course listed, as are various religious items."

"One curiousity, the tail of a stingray, if I translated that properly, can be an effective weopon. In addition, carrying bent metal, such as coins, can prevent the wakwak from carrying you away."

"One last item about the wakwak, which I found utterly unusual considering physics what else was happening that day: if you hear the cry of a wakwak and it is very loud, that means the wakwak is far away from you. The cry gets softer and quieter as it approaches."

"If you have questions, about this or any of the topics we've covered... or monsters and humans in general, I will do my best to answer them." After allowing some time for questions, Drac walked around the desk to stand behind it.

"Despite not getting the benefit of hearing my original lecture, I am afraid you will have to put up with the practicum from that lesson. I am afraid it may not make much sense, but," He lifted his hands and an amazingly diverse assortment of musical instruments and a rather large steamer trunk rose from under drop cloths behind him. "There are various fake body parts and masks, costumes, ribbons and gauze and tape and other moddable items in the trunk. Make yourself up as a zombie, grab an instrument, and have fun for the rest of the period."

Evan had no idea how to play an instrument... so he grabbed a kazoo. Kazoos seemed pretty straightforward.

Yeah, Evan could totally kazoo.

Mavis stared for a moment at the zombie costumes, then burst into laughter. "Guess what we did (http://fandomhigh.livejournal.com/3426917.html?thread=201748069#t201748069) yesterday in Fashion class?"

Oh well -- at least she'd be the zombiest zombie to ever zom, given the extra practice?

She just shook her head at the instruments, though. "I'll sing, but somebody else has to play."

Victor smeared some ashy grey stuff over his face, added green to his cheekbones, and then picked out a keyboard. He didn't really have the first idea how to play it, but he figured he could probably program it easily enough.

This was a weird assignment, but that was about what he expected from this class. He'd appreciated the wakwak lecture, anyhow.

Of course Evan was done working! He'd handed out those papers like a champ, and, while he'd much rather be sitting and quietly committing what was written on them to memory, he was going to rock that kazoo, if that was the class activity.

Hannibal would like to introduce Drac to the magic of xerox machines.
