The Philosophy of Food | Wednesday, 3rd Period

This week, Hannibal sent out e-mail ahead of time for the students to meet him at Portalocity, dressed for walking, where they were treated to the sight of Doctor Hannibal Lecter in casual clothing. Well, sturdy slacks, a linen button-up shirt, no tie, and a large (but stylish) hat.

"Last week, we emulated a bit of food economics. Today is for practical experience, as well as viewing some of the culture around producing food instead of preparing it." He gave them a tiny smile. "This week, I haven't made any food, though you will be able to have some if you like."

He smoothed a map against the wall. "We're not going far; we could have driven, but this will be faster. We'll be working with an organization called Gather Baltimore."

He rolled up the map and looked at the students. "Local farmers bring their produce to a number of markets around the area; at the end of the day, what they don't sell often gets thrown out. This group takes that food and redistributes it to shelters and societies that feed the hungry. We're going to help them, and I also expect you to speak with the farmers and learn more about how the food is grown and how they make a living."

He nodded at Mavis. "We will be going to a market which is partially indoors. If you have a question and I'm outside, please phone me." He looked over the class. "This goes for the rest of you as well; try not to wander too far, please." He checked his watch. "I expect you all to stay and help for the duration of our class. If you wish to stay longer, of course, you may. Questions?"

"Have you considered maybe something with a bit of padding?" Hannibal may have looked a little pained. If nothing else, sitting in a cooler seemed so...undignified. He couldn't see Dracula doing that, and wondered if he knew how his daughter was travelling.

This was the problem when your teacher and your parent became friends.

Mavis shrugged. "I guess we could send home for one of my baby coffins? But the cooler's probably easier for humans to carry. Plus less likely to freak strangers out."

Said the girl who'd offered to levitate a crate of watermelons for the first farmer she'd approached, yes. But once she'd seen the look on his face, she'd realized her mistake. Fandom might have humans in it, but it was very much not The Human World she'd been warned about all her life; this was.

Luckily she was having a good mesmerism day, or maybe the guy was just easily influenced by big blue eyes and an earnest plea to forget he'd ever seen the girl with the stripey tights or been cut off by that jerkass on 395 this morning. (Mavis had no idea what a three ninety five was or what someone might have cut off of him, but he'd been grumbling loudly to his wife about it when Mavis walked up, and she figured she might as well help improve his mood while undoing her faux pas.)

There were unfortunately a number of rude people on the roads. Hannibal did his best, but he was only one person.

"Perhaps something more like a coffin on the inside and a cooler on the out?" Hannibal suggested. "Unless perhaps you don't bruise?"

"I don't really. Definitely not as a bat; I've got fur." Mavis shifted the pile of boxes to her hip while she rubbed her nose, because super-strength. "A pillow or two might be nice, though."

Hannibal was fairly sure even furry things could bruise, but maybe vampire furry things were different.

"I'll see if there's a place nearby to buy one." He nodded at her pile of boxes. "Be careful not to overdo it, hm?" He quirked a tiny smile. "I'm not sure if vampires can get high blood pressure, but your father certainly does make the effort."
