Archery 102 [Friday, 1st Period]

When the students arrived at the Danger Shop today, they'd find everything looking like usual - Clint and his arms were there along with all their supplies, but today, the targets were swinging back and forth in a slow, rocking motion.

"Hey guys, I figured it was time to make things a little more challenging," Clint said. "If you're ever in a fighting situation like, say, dealing with a rain of sharks--" No, he wasn't going to be getting over that any time soon. "--you're gonna have to be able to take your shot while your target is moving. Get yourselves set up, and see how you do with these targets."

"Not everyone would forgive you for that." Leaving without saying anything, she meant. If something bad actually happened. "So, good for you for not being that dumb, at least."

"Yeah, I've upgraded to slightly dumb," Clint said. "Dumb enough to think people would be okay with me leaving at all. I'm sorry if I made you worried or anything. That wasn't my intention, as stupid as that sounds."

"I worried." She'd already pretty much admitted that before, so it wasn't too big a deal to say it in actual words. "But I guess you have to do whatever you have to do. And just try and not get killed."

"I try very hard not to get killed, believe me," Clint said. "And I'm sorry I worried you. Hopefully, that won't happen again for a while."

Natalie shrugged one shoulder and took a sip of coffee. "I'll be leaving soon, anyway. Probably won't have as much time to worry in Haiti."

Yes, she was moving to Haiti, and yes, that was bigger news than her nonchalant delivery would lead him to believe.

"You're going to Haiti? Is there a school there or something?"

Look, people graduated and went to college and stuff, that was how Clint figured it all worked.

Oh, Clint. That was such a misguidedly normal expectation to have! "No," she said. "I'll be an assistant to a friend who's currently a political advisor."

There were so many skinny teenagers in baggy t-shirts just like hers who would've said that as a joke. And yet.

"He's gonna pay you, right?" Clint's priorities were firmly in check, thank you. "Haiti's... not a terrible place, I guess, but I can think of safer places for you to be. Or is it a weird alternate Haiti that's actually super nice?"

"It's a couple centuries in the future." Probably counted as weird and alternate, then. "They have some issues that reflect ones right now, but mostly it's a nice country that Peter has been helping well. We haven't really talked about the money stuff, but I know I'm getting an apartment and I'll be taken care of. Won't be too shabby."

"Well, if you'll be taken care of, then you're set." It was possible Clint had low standards of good jobs. "Are you going to be too cut off to visit?"

"I think I'll be busy," she shrugged, "but I've already promised someone else to come back often enough anyway."

Because who could resist a crazy island every once in a while, really?

"Okay good," Clint said with a nod. "I guess what matters is that you'll be happy. If that's the case, then I'm happy for you."

But her ghost of a smile suggested that was the same thing as being happy.
