Around the World in Seven Weeks [Tuesday, July 30, 2013, 2nd period]

Anakin and Ben were in Portalocity waiting for the class with enough iced capps for everyone to enjoy while listening to the briefing. Ben was working his way through a box of Timbits, but those were just for him. Sorry.

"Today we're heading to Calgary, Alberta, Canada," Anakin said, pointing out the location on the map. "In the summer: I know this might be a concern to those of you who think Canada is constantly covered in snow."

Like Ben had been until they'd started doing research. Cough. "Calgary hosted the winter Olympics several decades ago," he said, "which is this totally astral sporting event that comes around every four years. Calgary's also home to several First Nations tribes in the area, including the Siksika, Stoney and Tsuu T'ina." Ben kind of destroyed the pronunciation of that last tribe.

"Explore Calgary, have fun with the activities and we'll meet you at the check-in point," Anakin concluded.

There are parts (ropes, sticks an canvas) laid out in the ground to make 12 foot tall tipis--a task that an experienced person can do single-handedly, but will prove to be more difficult for the students.

Please don't concuss yourself or anyone else putting these together. When you're done, a guide will hand you the next clue.

Theo spent a few second scratching his head and figuring out how to best do this. When he got started, he amazingly managed to get the whole thing up rather quickly. Of course, it looked a little rickety and like the slightest wind might blow it down but it was up and that was what counted.

He moved on to the next activity.

Oh, no, putting up a perfectly ordinary tipi, that might have been hard if Korra was, you know, a little kid.

Korra wasted no time getting a sturdy tipi up, with no more trouble than an unexpected burst of homesickness as she remembered Mom explaining the best way to do it if you didn't have anyone to lend a hand.

Then she realised the guide was one of the closest things this world had to Water Tribe and basically forget this was supposed to be a race as they started discussing things like the best knots to use on tents, fishing and polar bears versus polar bear dogs.

She'd never done this before but after giving it a quick look over, Karina got to work, and it went up rather easily.

Which, hey, she wasn't going to complain about! Karina headed off to the next activity.

Cordelia had at first thought this was going to be easy.

Then there was a lot of mostly-desperate, "Can I get a little help here?" and such.

No, she couldn't get a little help here.

Chaz figured out how to put the thing together fairly quickly. However, he realized there was a large gap between knowing how to do and physically doing it.

Kathy had no idea how to set up a tipi. None. This was the first time she'd even seen an authentic tipi, rather than Hollywood's idea of what a 'teepee' should look like.

There was a lot (a lot) of trial and error, including one attempt where she put all the sticks together on the ground and then tried to pull them up with the rope, and another few where she based her designs on a single, center, supporting pole.

This was way cooler than building a balsa-wood bridge in woodshop in middle school!

You get to pretend to be Olympic athletes!

In Slide, you have to complete the Olympic course on a luge at speeds up to 40 miles per hour, where you need to complete the course in 34 seconds or less. If you fail, you have to keep trying until you hit the target time.

In Ride, use a mountain bike to complete the Olympic slalom course in three minutes or less. If you fail to finish in the required time, you must keep trying to complete the time to receive the next clue.

Theo decided to slide. He sat down on the luge and looked around, trying to figure out how to get this thing to go. It didn't take much of a push before he was hurtling down and actually biting his lip and holding his breath because it seemed like a lot faster than it was.

When he got to the end, he found he'd made it in just under 34 seconds which meant he could move on. That had been kind of fun though.

Korra got down the slide with plenty of time to spare, but that didn't really help when you'd spent most of the class chatting.

Ice or no ice?

Yeah, Karina was going to take the one she was actually good at which meant the luge.

She took a second to glance over the course before getting on the luge and pushing off.

It totally wasn't a surprise to her that she made it with time to spare on the first go around.

The luge thing sounded way easier, so that was what Cordelia decided to do.

Apologies to the rest of the country that she was a really good screamer who thank god only needed to do this once.

Chaz felt very, very sad that he did the luge course in under 34 seconds on the first try. It completely made up for the previous task and the bruises from it.

Like most of her classmates, Kathy was going for the luge. She took an extra few seconds to calculate angles and the like in her head, and then flung herself onto the ice.

"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

At a Tim Hortons--Ben needed more Timbits.

Theo jogged in after finishing the luge, feeling pretty exhilarated. And clean! It was always good to come out clean after this class.

"You're second today," Ben said with a grin. "Good job."

"Thanks," Theo said, grinning. "The sled thing was pretty fun. And a little 'life flashing before my eyes' but mostly fun."

Oh, look, everyone else was here already. Surprise.

"Get lost?" Anakin guessed.

Karina looked around, checking for her classmates but...

"I'm first?"

Yes!

"You're first," Ben confirmed.

After the last thing, Cordelia got to the check in with messed up hair and a glare on her face.

At least she was trying to fix her hair.

"Oh it wasn't that bad," Anakin said. "We didn't make you swim in maple syrup."

Chaz had a grin on his face again. There hadn't been any chickens.

"Can we do the luge again?" It helped him ignore his slightly swollen finger.

Ben nodded. "Sure. That thing is astral."

Kathy came in, practically still bouncing. "That was so much fun!" she gasped. "Whee!"

"Luging or tipi building?" Anakin asked.

"...Why does it have to be or?"
