Around the World in Seven Weeks [Tuesday, July 23, 2013, 2nd period]

The Skywalkers were in their usual place in front of the map at Portalocity, both drinking from coffees they wouldn't be sharing with you.

"Hope you didn't put too much effort into your appearance today," Ben said with a tiny, wicked smile. "Today you're going to get a little messy."

"We're going to New Zealand," Anakin added, pointing it out on the map, "clear on the other side of the world from where we are, though the locals all speak English. As usual, you will have two tasks to complete before you find Ben and me."

There were chicken eggs involved again. Sorry, repeat takers of the class....

In Rev it Up, you have to drive a modified vintage car (stick shift, of course, and left hand drive, also of course) through a series of cones in under 83 seconds without hitting any of the cones. When you complete your task, you will be handed the next clue.

In Reel it In, you have to use a rod and reel to catch two fish that are at least a foot long. Once you have completed your task, you will be handed the next clue.

Don't ask how Korra managed to weave through the cones without touching any first try...she'd been trying to get the hang of driving in a straight line.

Theo didn't trust himself in a car so he tried to go fishing. It took him a few minutes to get used to the fishing rod but, amazingly, he hooked the first fish almost immediately. The second was a little harder and it took Theo some time to pull it in but he got and then he was off.

Come on! Kathy was 15 and from LA! It wasn't like she knew how to drive!

Looks like she was going fishing today.

She picked the shadiest spot she could, preparing to spend most of the class trying to catch one good-sized fish, never mind two--only to have her line bob the instant it hit the water. She reeled it in, saw it was almost two feet, and tossed it into her basket. Okay, one down, one to--

The hook wasn't even in the water when the second fish jumped to try and get at the worm. By the time the hook was submerged, there were several fish swirling around trying to get at it.

"Hey guys!" she called to anyone else that had chose this option. "Good spot over here!"

Chaz and cars had a very unusual relationship. At least this one didn't explode.

Drive to Methven (on the wrong side of the road as the United States, so please don't die), and prepared to run an obstacle course known as a "Shemozzle". After dressing in gum boots, stubbies shorts, and a burlap sack (because of course), you pick a shepherd and farm dog and then run through the course where you would be covered in molasses and feathers, climb over hay bales, and finally ride an inner tube down a slide into a manure pond, all while collecting chicken eggs along the way, that you put in a basket at the end of the course.

Once you have 12 unbroken eggs in their basket, a task that could take multiple runs of the course, a shepherd would give you the next clue.

Why would you have Korra drive more than once, why?

Maybe it was cheating to bend an air-scooter to go through the course, but it kept the eggs from breaking and her clothes somewhat more clean than they could have been. In any case, her dog (she'd picked the one that looked the most like Naga) got properly dirty.

So, Theo's good luck pretty much stopped here. He didn't completely fail but he broke a few eggs and felt absolutely weighed down by the molasses and the hay that clung to him.

He eventually made it through and tried not to gag at the manure he'd been in. Dev had seemingly hibernated at this task because there was just no good way to handle it.

Ange was trying to be encouraging but yeah.

Driving. On a real road. On the wrong side of it. Why did they want Kathy to die? Did they not like her? Couldn't they just give her a detention and be done with it?

The important thing, she decided when she got to Methuen, was never telling anyone how many times she'd closed her eyes on the trip. And maybe sitting down for a little bit while she got dressed, because her knees weren't entirely sure they still belonged to her.

The obstacle course was easier (if messier) than she'd expected. Running and climbing were easy enough if you were a gymnast, as was snatching at the eggs. She sacrificed a little bit of speed for care and only needed to end up in the poo pond once.

Which was more than enough, thanks.

Chickens. Of course it was chickens. Chaz really hated his life at this moment.

Covered in molasses, feathers, and manure. Don't you loooove this class?

They have set up outdoor showers for you to rinse off before your next class because they don't completely hate you.

Even with the protection of her air-scooter Korra was very glad she was a waterbender right now. Very glad.

"You're the first to arrive," Ben said, grinning at her all clean and dry.

Bastard.

"Whoo!" Korra threw her fists up in celebration.

It was purely an accident she still happened to be bending (clean) water at the time and sent a stream straight at Ben. Yes, purely an accident.

Ben sputtered. "Um," he said, wringing out his shirt.

"...oops."

At least it wasn't mud?

"Oops," Ben echoed dryly.

His voice was the only thing that was dry.

Theo needed a shower but at least it didn't look like he was dead last this time. Thank goodness.

"You're third today," Anakin said, smiling. "Not bad. The showers are over there."

"I'll take it," Theo said, making a face. "Sorry if I smell."

"I'd be more surprised if you didn't," Anakin said.

Kathy barely bothered to check in. There was a quick glare as she made her way to the shower. They were not allowed to talk to her until she was done communing with the water.

And soap. All of the soap. Ridiculous amounts of soap.

"It's in my hair!"

It would be a few. Luckily, she'd ended with plenty of time.

"Fun, huh?" Ben called cheerfully.

La la la! She was ignoring you, Ben!

At least until the water was running clear at her feet and she couldn't catch a whiff of anything that didn't smell like soap and artificial flowers.

And then she was marching out of the shower, barely dry but tugging on her clothes anyway, and stomped her way over to the red-haired Skywalker.

"What purpose did that serve?" she asked tightly. She wanted to yell, but she couldn't. It would be inappropriate to yell at a teacher, even the younger, less-scary one. "My first experience driving? In New Zealand?! I really could have been killed! I could have killed other people! I am an unsafe driver!"

Ben stared at her blankly. In his galaxy, people flew when they were nine and ten and it hadn't occurred to either Skywalker that that wasn't normal.

"Huh?"

That 'Huh' threw Kathy off of her stride a little bit. It...wasn't the response she'd been expecting. "I--I--what?"

What did he mean, 'Huh'?!

"How do you not know how to pilot?" Ben wondered. "I learned when I was four or something."

Let's look at your family's childcare choices, Ben.

"Sure," she said, reminding herself very hard that we do not roll our eyes at teachers, Katherine, that is rude. Even if they were exaggerating or counted sitting on someone's lap and beeping the horn as 'learning to drive.'

"I don't know where you're from, but my family doesn't have a car," she continued, keeping her voice even. "Mostly because we live in L.A. Like, twenty percent of the population of L.A. don't have cars. And even if we did, I'm not legally old enough to learn to drive one! Oh my god! What if I'd gotten pulled over in New Zealand! I'd have been driving without a license! And illegally in the country without a passport! I could have been detained! Deported! They might have called my parents!"

"Oh, Granddad would've have taken care of that," Ben said.

Mindwhammying local officials for great justice!

"You don't have a car? Really?"

"Taken care of...?" Now Kathy was side-eying the guy with the cloak. "Take care of how?"

This was the teacher that had her driving a car illegally. She didn't know.

"Why is it so weird not to have a a car? Lots of people don't have cars. Lots of people can't even afford cars." Oh, if this were Tumblr, Ben, you'd so have a 'check yr privilege' hashtag. So would. "I don't think my parents even know how to drive."

Ben would not do well on Tumblr.

"He's really persuasive," Ben said vaguely. "Huh. Most people I know have starships."

Sigh.

"And yet, no one I know has any," Kathy said dryly.

"They should get some," Ben said with a little smile. "They're astral. Next week we'll make sure no one has to drive, okay?"

"I'll check Craigslist," Kathy promised. "And--thank you. I'm okay with breaking all the laws of physics, time, and the known universe, but driving without a license is still a bit much for me."

And also the near-death. She didn't like it.

"Do you have some strange interest in chickens?" Chaz asked, finally making it to the finish line.
