Charming Your Way Into and Out of Things, Monday, Period 2

Rejoice, class! The Spirit was actually present this week! They were in a normal classroom, and he was sitting on the edge of the desk up front with his legs stretched out, and his hat on the desk next to him. The rest of his outfit wasn't going anywhere, though. Not even the coat. He nodded in greeting at the students. "Hello, kids," he said. "I am the Spirit, and this is Charming Your Way Into And Out of Things. If you're in the wrong place ––" He smiled at them. "–– please consider staying anyway. Charm helps everyone and makes the world a little bit sweeter for all of us."

It had for him, at least. And he was technically dead so he needed all the sweetness he could find.

"I apologize for my absence last week, but I was urgently needed back in Central City. My thanks to Mr. Langstrom for stepping in." And for accepting mysterious letters as a valid mode of TA recruitment. "I won't make you introduce yourselves again, so this week, we're getting right to the basics. What all of you kidlets think charm is, and what it's good for. And after some discussion on that point, I'll ask you to pair up and practice a very basic charming action: complimenting each other. Now, let's get to it."

Like your teacher actually showed up!

There's not much of a lecture, but the Spirit wants you to discuss stuff with him as a group! "So, come on. What do you consider charming? What's a charming person have? A dashing smile? Excellent manners? How do you think a person can benefit from being charming?"

Or just listen to others say stuff. That's cool too.

"Making the person you're talking to feel good about themself is a fairly basic result and goal of being charming. So, pair up, and try to make each other feel nice with a compliment."

Always happy to lend an ear and a smile.

Apologies for lateness. I repeatedly forgot today's Monday. And that I have this workshop on Mondays.

Theo Langstrom

This guy looked almost exactly like Theo thought a guy named The Spirit would look. And he was really glad the guy was back because another week of teaching would have been awful since he had no idea how to do.

"Uh, I guess charming's...someone who can make you smile," Theo decided. "Even when maybe you don't wanna smile."

This didn't sound like too tough a challenge. He could compliment his partner, no problem. He even got a few compliments ready while he waited for someone to team up with.

No longer alone and very relieved about that, yes!

Theo still didn't know how good a TA he could be but he was there, nonetheless. And perfectly willing to help out should anyone want to deal with his awkwardness.

"Well, charm is essential to making the world a more friendly place," Rilla said. "There's no reason to go around being rude all the time when you could just...ignore the unpleasantness and obvious oddities."

Like a man in a mask teaching the class, for one.

Rilla smiled at him. "You did very well with the last class on such short notice."

"Thank you," Theo said, returning her smile with one of his own. "It's nice of you to say that. And I appreciate you being encouraging and nice to me when I know the class wasn't great."

"Well, no one is naturally brilliant at talking to strangers," Rilla assured him. "At least, no one I know is."

"Yeah, but I appreciated everyone no groaning and rolling their eyes at me," Theo said with a light laugh. "Even if they might have wanted to. I'm really glad that I'm not teaching this week."

Mercy Thompson

"I think a lot of time someone who's charming can get away with a lot of stuff others can't," Mercy suggested.

Mercy looked around for someone to compliment.

"The most charming thing is really engaging when you're talking to someone," Mira said. "And if you can engage them enough, they won't even see the Bothan stunner coming, which will give you plenty of time to see if there's a bounty you can pick up on them."

Yes, that was how she benefited from her charm. Violently, and then monetarily.

"Well, you look like a good person to compliment, and I'm not just saying that because you don't have a partner yet," Mira said. She was mostly saying it because it was literally the assignment, of course.

"Why thank you," Mercy said, also following the assignment. "It's very thoughtful of you to say that."

"No, no, thank you for... being so polite?" Mira tried. "I'll be honest, I'm not sure how long I can keep this going. I'm at two compliments and the sincerity is already getting to be too much for me."

Mercy laughed. "I think you're doing great, and since the assignment was only for one compliment, I think you've done all you need to."

"Good to know, because I was about out of them," Mira said. "No offense. It's a me issue, not a you issue."

"I'm not worried about it," Mercy said easily. "It's hard to just randomly keep coming up with compliments. Especially for someone you barely know."

"Actually, with my track record? That's probably the best time to shower me with compliments," Mira snarked.

"Are you suggesting that once I get to know you I won't be able to find anything nice to say?" Mercy teased. "You should have met the people I grew up with."

"Well, not 'anything,' exactly," Mira noted. "But the compliments tend to come with sighs and grunts and the word 'but.' Like, 'Mira's good at her job. Ugh. Leave some for the rest of us.' And 'Sure, she's pretty, but she will seriously elbow you in the throat without any warning.'"

That got another laugh. "You're sounding more and more like the people I grew up with."

"You didn't grow up on Nar Shaddaa by any chance, did you?" Mira checked.

"Aspen Creek, Montana," Mercy said with a shake of her head. "Sorry."
